  1. The firehouse was completed and occupied by the summer of 2006. They are talking about 10-100, the Park St house, quarters of Jackson Engine and the Fire Patrol. The house also serves as the Dept/District HQ.

Consolidate all eight companies under one roof? You must not be familiar with the area they cover if you're asking that question. It wouldn't be very realistic to consolidate just the six companies in the heart of the village, much less bringing Empire H&L in Upper Nyack and Orangetown Engine in South Nyack into the discussion.

  2. ALS hit the nail on the head, and it's the old cliché of "they sure don't build things like they used to!" Now don't get me wrong, I'm sure many of the rigs us 30 and 40 year old hold in high regard that were built in the 60s and 70s and even 80s, the old timers probably looking down on as not being as well built as the rigs they grew up with. However I can say with absolute certainty that the Pierces of today just don't have the same feel to them that the Pierce rigs I grew up on had. You can't even specify the material you want the cab made from anymore, it's aluminum or bust (speaking strictly of Pierce here). Same with the body, unless you specify you want galvanized or stainless steel, aluminum is the default and in some cases, the only choice (midmount tower ladders). Speaking of aluminum vs steel, I get a kick out of how our Pierce dealers back in the day used to trash aluminum aerials as being "weak" and "dangerous". Now that Pierce has their own line of aluminum aerials, all of a sudden the tune has changed, and aluminum is the cat's meow! I'm not naive, I understand how marketing works, but that doesn't mean I can't be amused by it!

  3. Canopy cabs are way too common to include in this discussion, and there are certainly a good number of them still in service. Nearly every cab built in the 60s, 70s and 80s was a canopy style, from the ever popular Mack CF series, to most American LaFrance cabs, to most of the early Pierce Dash cabs, to Maxim, Ward LaFrance, Young, Hendrickson, etc etc etc. Of course, that all changed with the release of the 1991 edition of NFPA 1901, which mandated fully enclosed cabs for all new apparatus and major refurbs, among many other significant changes to apparatus. You could easily argue that NFPA 1901 (1991 Edition) to this day has had the most impact on the fire apparatus industry, and is more or less responsible for the demise of Mack and other players in the fire apparatus arena.

Here's a video on Duddy's YouTube that shows Haverstraw's rig responding and operating at one of its last fires after 40 years of service.

  4. Rescue H&L Haverstraw's 1969 Peter Pirsch TDA "4-99" runs with a roofless cab. It was delivered with roof intact, and was cut off not long afterwards. Sadly, the aerial has failed inspection a few weeks ago, and is now in limited service until it can be replaced with a new rig. Truly the end of an era.

  6. I'm happy to announce that the official 44-Control Live Audio Feed is now hosted on RadioReference.com!

    http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/?feedId=2823

This is a very significant move for a number of reasons:

    - The feed will now be able to support an unlimited number of connections. This means no more "Unable to connect" messages when there's a major or interesting incident on the air.

    - The audio delay that was sometimes up to a pitiful, excruciating 1 minute and 30 seconds is now reduced to around 10 seconds or less!

    - Easy to use interface which includes a built in Web Player. No more need to use a standalone player like iTunes or WinAmp or Windows Media Player. Now you can listen right from your browser, including on mobile devices. You still have the option of listening from one of these standalone players if you prefer that.

    - Mobile device apps are available for listening to the feed (see http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Live_Audio_Mobile_Device_Support for more info)

    - Audio archives from the previous 2 weeks are automatically saved on RadioReference.com, and are available to those with a Premium Subscription to the website (currently $30 per year)

Please update your favorites, bookmarks and links accordingly. The old links to the feed will not work anymore in a few weeks. Any questions, comments or concerns, post here in this thread or contact me directly.

  7. Yeah some of those old clips from the 80s are interesting, to say the least. The cassette tapes I took them off were in rough shape, especially the Spring Valley fire, so I did the best I could with cleaning up the audio. I actually look forward to 20+ years from now when guys listen to the clips I'm making now and get a kick out of them!

  8. Jackson is green, you've got to really zoom in to see it otherwise Chelsea's marker hides it. My bad on the Rocklands, I'm going to go through the entire file this week and check/update it. Figure I'll add the GPS coordinates to the descriptions for anyone wanting to explore Rockland's firehouses, that'll make it easier for them to punch into a GPS device.

  9. I find it very curious that the article makes absolutely no mention of the handful of New Square residents who DID join Hillcrest a few years ago. Where are they now? Are they still active members? If not, why? Funny how none of this is addressed in that article, instead making it seem like the idea of New Square residents joining Hillcrest is some new, novel idea.

Note the two gentlemen on the right in this photo from the Park Ave fire back in Dec 2006:

There is SO much more to this saga than meets the eye and is written about in the paper. I really shouldn't even be posting on this topic, I deleted my previous posts for good reason, but this is just getting ridiculous now with the misleading articles being printed. I'm getting concerned that the FD is starting to look like the bad guys here, which could not be further from the truth.

  10. I'd really like the American LaFrance name and legacy (what's left of it, at least) to finally be retired with some dignity. And to think, back in 1985 when they moved from Elmira to Bluefield, I thought those rigs were tarnishing the legacy of the once proud ALF name. Turns out, compared to what they've been putting out for the past decade, the Century 2000 rigs were jewels (the Patriots were junk, however). This sad sage just keeps getting worse and worse, and while some might disagree with me and like the early Eagle chassis, I never have.

  11. Funny this topic comes up now, I just came across my old "Statue of Liberty" VF plates and thought about selling them on eBay.

Those plates present an odd situation, as NYS never required them to be turned in when they were discontinued at the end of 2000 and the new style "Empire State" plates were issued. In fact, you had the option to keep your old tag # for a one time fee, which is why there are new style plates that don't fit the ABC-1234 format. In any case, you were allowed to keep the old "Liberty" plates, and they became invalid for use on all vehicles at the end of 2001. So, my feeling and understanding is that the state gave up ownership of those "Liberty" plates once they reissued the "Empire" plates without requiring the old, invalid plates to be turned in.

I just called DMV and asked if I could sell or give away my "Liberty" plates, and was told "Sure, they haven't been valid in years, it's not a problem" Although he did caution that just for the sake of avoiding any hassle, it would probably be best not to sell or give away any plates that have a tag # that is currently registered, regardless of the status of the physical plates themselves. He did confirm that the DMV does NOT reissue tag #'s.

Hope this bit of info helps clear things up, at least about the "Liberty" series plates. Of course it goes without saying that I have none of this in writing, so proceed at your own risk and don't blame me if you get jammed up!

  12. My point was that some snide remarks were made on RocklandFires right after Medic 25 got into an MVA with this new truck. Instead of expressing concern for those involved, the first two replies were along the lines of "Guess the new striping doesn't work!" So yes, it's a "good point" in that it reminds us not to be complacent even with all the lights, sirens and reflective striping in the world (as I pointed out myself), but my comment went to a deeper issue that I didn't think should be rehashed on another board in public.

Just an F.Y.I., the new truck already has had an accident !

Again with the mentioning of the MVA in the same breadth as the new striping. Unless you know the exact circumstances of what caused that MVA, why would you mention it again in public? All the striping, lights and sirens in the world won't stop bad drivers and stupid people from hitting emergency vehicles. You really ought to know better than try to make some lame point that the striping doesn't work based on one incident that you don't even know the details of.

  14. I can't believe anyone would actually defend BNN in this matter, although I guess there is some obvious bias in this case. How many times have they now been duped by this site? It has to be a handful at least, right? I've seen guys copy IA's between boards word for word, and I don't really like that. (I'm not talking about a member's original post, obviously anyone is free to post their own alerts on as many boards as they wish...I'm talking about guys copying OTHER people's IA's word for word) However, at least in those cases that is information going from one not-for-profit message board to another, in a way we're all one big community with a lot of cross-members anyway. This crap with BNN is a different situation entirely, as these guys are MAKING MONEY off their service. Unfortunately, some of the "dispatchers" BNN has are literally kids...some younger than 15 years old! With that in mind, does anyone really expect the quality of the service to be top-notch, or for their to be much integrity to the info-gathering process? I suspect many of these dispatchers just want to be the guy who always gets the scoop before anyone else, to hell with accuracy or facts!

  15. 1. ALL photos MUST, MUST be originally yours. This means they must come from your camera. Please state in the thread that you took the photos and they are property of you.

    6. If the photos aren't yours, but you've obtained permission to post them, please express that in your post, including the original photographer.

These two rules completely contradict one another. Either the photo "MUST, MUST" have been taken by the poster according to #1...or the poster can post other people's photos as long as they have permission according to #6. Which is it?
