  1. 1. Accepting the fact that you will never know everything.

    2. Realizing that it is a Team Effort and one person alone can not get it done.

    3. Training is like breathing, it should only stop when you are dead.

    4. Share your knowledge and experiences with others so they can learn.

    5. There are no dumb questions in the fire service, ASK SOMEONE!

I believe the same goes for EMS as well, you hit the nail right on the head.

  2. It is unfortunate. However, one guy i did OT with from HM1 put it nicely saying "too bad you guys don't get to be in the class. When i fall face down in the slurry i just mixed up you're the one i want knowing what it's made of, what it's gonna do to me and how to fix that."

Thats excatly the reason y I joined the local county HazMat team so I can get the advanced training and have a clue, I don't like to be clueless @ the scene of dangerous assignments I feel it's unsafe, and the local hazmat team will send me to all the cool training that fdny officers do anyway so i'm still one up.

  3. roofsopen is correct. None of us in the HazTac ambulances (i'm on 12R) have taken the 'tech 2' class, regardless of what your, and my, certificate says. From EMS only the HazTac lieutenants have attended that class. They guys who were teaching the 'basic' class' went above and beyond what was required (at least when i took it). We pretty much did everything that was required for the tech 2 class minus mitigation, which i believe is an integral part. They made up for it by extra chem and bio (oh! the Krebs' cycle!!) Also, EMS HazTac ambulances are no longer responsible for decon operations. We are responsible for triage and patient care.

X635...word is the HazTac buses we're getting 2 years ago (not a typo  rolleyes.gif ) are F-450 and will have an extra compartment about 2 feet wide between the cab and the pt. compartment that will house scot paks and whatever else we can squeeze in there.

ok i apologize to roofsopen...i'm not happy when people dumb down our jobs... when it was not so easy to get a spot on a tac truck I earned that. I am sorry

  4. JUst to clarify, all Rescue ambulances are 'Haz-Tac' (FDNY's way of saying HazMat), but not all Haz-Tac ambulances are Rescue ambulances. Haztac ambulances are more for decon, Rescue ambulances are for USAR type stuff.

My job is not strictly decon dry.gif My job is PT CARE in areas of Haz Mat, hence E.M.S. HAZ MAT Tech, other wise they would have made a special unit of firefighters for decon, gone are the days of deconing everyone else, the job has changed greatly since homeland security and 9/11 and for the better I might add, EMS is being better utilized, and, as a side note there are 3 types of Haz Tac ambulances 1:Basic Life Support Haz Mat trained E.M.T.S Designated Henry units 2:Paramedic Haz Mat trained Techs Designated Zebra units and 3: Paramedic Haz Mat Techs trained for confined space rescue and rescue opps "Rescue Medics"

  5. This "made up" job is one that requires a judgement call and common sense, as my rule of thumb I pass nothing unless a fender bender, w/ everyone walking and not complaining of pain, no one should bypass any ancident they come upon in this case the jaws are required and people are bypassing it to go to a fire, both we should say are life altering jobs and if my mom was in the car u bypass to go to a fire and no one stops to render aid and the proper tools and equipment are on that truck......so help me god.......if u come upon something it must be addressed.

  6. Aren't we all a little heartless in 1 way or another? I trully believe we are, because if we were not we would crumble on every CPR job and ever job where the elderly are neglected it's how we as emergency services (PD, FIRE, EMS) survive. Unfourtunally it really is part of the job death, destruction etc.

  7. What makes anyone think that they won't be checking this stuff? They found a battalion chief w/ a false degree as well as other F.D.N.Y. officers, I'm very sure all of this stuff will be scrutinezed I mean cmon all I can put on my locker is a flag. Their is a huge crack down on EVERYTHING.

  8. The army announced not too long ago they were turning over Ft Totten.  Is was part of an assesment of military facilities in the tristate area.  It came out about the same time Camp Smith was designated for expansion.  They are maintaining most if not all of their current facilities on the base.  The PD/FDNY squable is common knowledge around the grounds.  Something to do with the k9 facility and and new EVOC course they are about to get.

The improvement plans for the rock were laid out by the dept.  I'm sure they're somewhere on the citys website.

89/50's house is so small that both rigs have to come out for the ladder(?) to leave.  FDNY announced a new lot had been purchased in that area.

The Jacobi facility is in rough shape.  From what I've been told the dept has demanded improvements and the hospital wants the space.  That should equal a new station.

A few months ago an announcement was made about the Zerega ave purchase for a new EMS battalion.  Battalion 3 is the general concensus and makes the most sense.  Then again if the dept is going to leave Jacobi, maybe the current station just gets moved.

Just about all of this info is public info that has been announced in the past year (ft totten handover 3 yrs)  My next night in the house I'll sit down and see if I can dig up actual links.

Cool man thanks, I came out of 20 and there was talk of that stuff as far as the b3 happening I was on 03J and our input was asked to see where a station could go not sure where the property they finally bought is. 89/50 house is small, I have a couple of friends there, had dinner there a couple times they move the engine back about 1/4 way into the house and the choufer does have to be pretty skillfull opperating the truck, that house on that service rd never made any sense to me but then again I think alot of the houses in the city need to be moved due to traffic and various other reasons so what do I know. yea it would be cool to have the links thanks a bunch man safe tour.

  9.   It was only recently that Ft Totten was fully handed over to the city.  Theres a little squable between PD and Fire over the property,  Theres talk of a new house for 89/50 on Tremont the top of my head.  On the EMS side, a new station 20 off the Jacobi grounds, a new battalion 03 on Zerega (land was purchesed in '06)

If I may sir where are u getting ur information from? I would like to pass this information to others this is all very intriguing. thanks ahead of time.

  10. I find this funny because i'm sure my answer is goin to be the same as alot of people on here only I'm happy i'm saying it first. "I wanted to help people"

sds cheesy but really thats it. I wanted to do something that meant something to someone, so @ 16 I became an emt and rode w/a corp in NJ till I moved to ny and rode up here then, on the paid side I wanted to do something that I loved doing and I did it for free so I went to fdny ems so i'm pretty lucky so far. I have other plans career wise but i'm sure no 1 wants to hear that. Thats my story.

  11. I have had some problems in orange county as well, state rt 17 east and west bound, their have been several bad jobs I have had the missfortune of being a part of...seems like the state needs to get their keister in gear or several more people will lose their lives. Orange county would benifit greatly from barriers dividing rt 17.

  12. Are you kidding me rookie.  Are you looking to start a war

right.....because i'm not issued a bullet resistant vest and have never been shot in my direction in the projects because my uniform dose not look like a cops

rookie ur very ignorant please keep ur posts to what ur 100% sure about because ur not very good w/opinion

  13. Personally I'm glad the HazTac and Rescue units are still doing regular calls.  There are s few calls where they are actually needed for their specialized skills that their patient care would probbly suffer if they were held for their specialized calls.

I'm glad thats what u think.... we would like to be placed lower on the suger strings so we can do what we are trained for instead of the drunk on the corner, that way the "regular" line units don't have to do what we're trained for, and people w/ a little bit more knowlege and equipment are on scene.

  14. I remember an article on Firehouse.com about FDNY starting a new rescue-medic program where the medics/EMTs actually assist in the rescues, allowing them to treat sooner.  Don't have much information on it though.

Those buses in new york are paramedic staffed and they are rescue medics the busses are know as robert buses the medics go through confined space rescue classes they also I believe go through the fire rescue school so they can be on the same page during rescues

  15. Haztac ambulances: I am trained to Haz Mat tech level 2 in New York City. My main function is pt care in the instance of a nuke or biological attack (the whole big yellow suit deal) the ambulances also carry c.o meters and we are suposed to respond to co calls w/ pts. Haz Tac ambulances carry 2 scott pack respirators, a hydrant wrench, rubber garden hose w/hydrant attachment for decon purposes, fireground radios for comm w/ fire, decon tub, and this is besides the regular assortment of ems equipment I might have neglected some things I'm doin this quickly.

ok now for the other question....I was told that the ambulances bid has been put in but we'll be lucky if we see the rigs halfway through 2008 I was told the differences will be I believe the same chasis and 1 or 2 extra compartments on the out side and the bus and i belive it will be a bit higher

This leaves no room for personal equipment such as the new P.P.E. we are suposed to carry and the normal set of ems equipment such as trauma bags and O2 thats why we wanted bigger buses but seems a bit late huh?
