Sorry, guys, I'll have to disagree. It's not Band-Aid repairs, it's. not an improper use of the bidding process. I was at the original dedication of the training center and it was one of the greatest things the county could do for the fire service.
So what happened to it? We wrecked it! Not once but over and over. Instead of following NFPA guidelines that allow for a maximum of 150lbs of Class A combustibles, we torched much more than that. We spalled the concrete and warped the steel doors and window shutters. All of this not for actual knowledge snd skills to be gained, but just to say {to no one who gives a crap) how macho we are because our fire was bigger than yours.
If you are not getting enough runs and want your helmet look salty, put in in your Barbecue grill and don't wreck a perfectly good Training Center again.

Proof why you have to try to mediate problems when they first occur, before the blow up to huge scandals like this. Obviously the issue has been brewing since the expelled chief was a captain. Hopefully we all can learn from this, and motivate us to remedy these sort of incidents while they are still in their infancy.

The Only reason anyone noticed this time from any other time a member of the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department member has passed away because it was covered by the press. Anytime a member passes away thats what the department does. Do I believe it detracts from a LODD funeral, No. In fact hopefully this is the closest thing ever that the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department experiences to a LODD funeral. I can tell you if that sad day does come the men and women of the department will show everyone the difference between this funeral and a LODD. And this does Not slight anybodies efforts at doing what they can for any member who passes away for any reason.
On a lighter Note Happy Thanksgiving to everyone

My father was a Mahopac Volunteer Firemen, he passed away from a non LODD injury, received the same honors(the flag in front of the firehouse for Purdy was added because of the surrounding departments wanting to help out and I believe because he was the head of the department.) Several members have passed away this year and some decided they did not want these honors. Again, the only reason no one has ever noticed anything is because it wasn't covered by the press. The department also helped give the same honors to FDNY members who have passed away from the area that were not LODD.
Like others have stated there is nothing like a LODD funeral. The atmosphere is a lot more somber, you have to park two towns away and take a shuttle just to get close because theres 5-10,000+ firemen who are there to honor a fallen brother they may or may not ever even met. Saluting for 15-20 mins as it takes the family to drive passed the sea of firemen, bag pipe band marching, dignitaries from all over speaking, a motorcade of chopper cops 4 wide 25 deep, flags all over the place. I've frozen my butt off on Staten Island, and Wooster Mass, Ive sizzled my egg rolls in long island, and been drenched right here in Putnam county under the pouring rain. The Purdy Funeral of a 5 min procession passed 200 firemen (who all new him) underneath a flag was a very nice tribute. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and unfortunately its hard to please everyone especially in the fire service. How about we kill this issue since its not going to change the way they operate. Everyone can take what we've discussed and bring it back to their own departments. And however any department decides to choose to honor their dead is good enough for me. But, lets stop beating a dead horse.

  13. firefighter2711 liked a post in a topic in FDNY test in 2011
I am a volunteer firefighter /EMT and am also serving my country in the USAF. I am thinking about getting out of the military soon and am planning on take the test for the FDNY. It is really unfortunate that because of a small group of ppl that did not have the educational background to full fill their dream ruined it for those who made it in class 6019. Now I know that my pride as firefighter and as a Puerto Rican, it would piss me off that when I pass this new test for the FDNY. It will be cheapened by the fact that these ignorant ppl have lowered the bar so they could make it. I don’t know how they can live with themselves furthermore aspire to be fire fighters in the FDNY. This job is not for those faint of heart who will complain if it gets to hot or their tired, Giving up in this line of work is not an option. Sorry I got on my soap box but I love what I do and I hope to have the honor of working with all of you some day. GOD BLESS.
