  1. Posted at the request of my chief to EMT Bravo members.

As chief of the Pelham Manor fire department, I can now say (especially to all those doubters out there) that all the engineering, pre-planning, research, and long flights back and forth to Wisconsin were worth it. We now have (or will have in several days), virtually a brand new 2009 Seagrave 75' Tower Ladder- complete with a 500 HP Cummins diesel, Allison 4000EVS transmission, Spicer 1810 rear, with axles rated @ 22,800 and 33,500 F&R respectively. A full stainless body, seating for 4, state of the art electronics and hydraulics for the boom and jacking system, and just enough lights and sounds to get the job done- no parade wagon- a real work truck. Full marks go to Seagrave engineering staff, our salesman (name upon his authorization), and members of the PMFD for their input into this massive undertaking. 2361

  2. Two quick ideas I didn't see here yet:

    1. Snowballs. They work great as they stay together until they get to the heat, like the ABC bombs and we've yet to see cracking from them.

    2. Out a cast iron pan of water into the stove and close it up, the steam will kill the fire in the chimney.

Nice and simple and not technologically advanced. We have to remember to use the tools that are available to us. We don't always have to use specially crafted tools made just for the fire service.

  3. As a commercial ambulance paramedic, I always see myself as playing in somebody else's sandbox. If I beat the FD to the scene and find out that I have a situation where further personnel would not be beneficial in any regard, I will advise the dispatch agency that we are under control at the scene and FD can disregard at their discretion. This allows the FD officer to make the decision and I don't step on any toes because I can't possibly remember every department's SOGs on cancellation when I could be in any of 100+ jursidictions. In areas where we respond with volunteer FD's, I see it as my effort to help get the firefighters back to their jobs, families, or beds a bit quicker.

Now that's using your head and great collaboration with other agencies.

  4. I was having this very conversation yesterday(it's daily isn't it though?) with a friend who now has to speak at a meeting involving state aid to private schools. There are no vouchers, and now the state wants to cut what little aid there is.You already pay school taxes whether you use the schools or not.So now tuition will go up as well.Iknow ,I know, thats his choice, but its one in a million examples of how everything is being trickled down to the taxpayer, and it all boils down to the govt. in bed with corporations that dole out billions for profit. This is it,something has to break, and yes it did start with a tea party. The rumblings are getting louder every day.

can you elaborate more on this state aid to private schools.

  5. First of all, I dont know what half the people on here are talking about. There is no Mamaroneck Station 1, 2, 3, etc. Mamaroneck has (had) 5 houses. Volunteers, Hook and Ladder, Mamro, Columbia, and Halstead Manor. There will now only be 4, with the construction of the new building and the decomissioning of 2 of them. So please - make sure you know what you are saying, especially if you are from the Dept. There is no "station 1,2,3 etc. Also, there are still old ladders in service. Pelham Manor is operating a 1973 Tower Ladder as first due.

Just wanted to make some corrections before this thread continues down the road of factually incorrect information.

What does Pelham Manor have to do with this? By the way, we are awaiting the arrival af a new Tower Ladder.

  6. About 15-20 years ago George Carlin did a benefit fundraise for the Larchmont Volunteer Ambulance Corp at the Iona College gym. If you never got a chance to see him live you missed some funny stuff. He was able to use the 7 words that you can't say on T.V. and then some.

I remember that benefit. the "7" words-I still remember them all and when I first heard them. It is ironic, we were just talking about him the other day at work. The "7" words were the main topic. May he rest in peace.

  7. All these devices are designed and measured for getting the person directly in front of you to turn around and get out of the way. They are NOT designed to protect your flanks from orthogonal crossfire.

Taking the gun analogy....If you only fire your gun straight ahead [sirens in a grille],-- whether it be rifle or shotgun-- you are still going to get smacked up the left side of your head by the dude with the base ball bat standing next to you.

Gotta love the analogies. :):) This is very true. And lets not forget about driveways and parking lots.

  8. My issue with Training And Safety is that it can be redundant to the other forums.

In its place, I would create a "Training Oppurtunities" section, where people could post various training oppurtunities.

Training, Health, And Safety -> Section would be deleted, training health and safety would be discussed in applicable forum (Fire, EMS, Police, etc

I would like to see the training, health, and safety Section remain. It provides an easy path to find new training seminars, ideas, etc. This is one place I look on all fire and ems forums and has proven invaluable.

My issue with Training And Safety is that it can be redundant to the other forums

Redundancy in this area is a good thing. Repetition of training, health, and Safety issues helps keep them in the forefront and helps make good practices automatic.
