  1. The New Engine 51 More Pictures to Follow !!!
  2. Arriving on scene, I see the markings out front that represent it is a condemed building. Being that it is my first due, I was already aware of this. Placing the Quint Side A @ A/B Corner or A/D Corner I have the operator rasie the ladder to the roof. When greeted by the person I attempt to gather information from the escaped sqatter exact location in the building these other people are, their condition (cons, stoned, etc) when he/she left them. I then order the truck w-o the leaving the safety of the ladder open the roof. Once the roof is open, I would then direct the crew to open the top floor windows and begin fire suppression from the exterioir. For no reason will I send ff's into the involved floors. If they saw a victim within reach or feel that they can safely get to them in a rapid method without risking definte ff lives.. get em.. any farther than that NO WAY.. If there is that much smoke showing as seth described.. if these individuals were on the fire floor on arrival.. they have probably succumded to the smoke at that point. I would much rather answer for 3-4 squatters that broke into a condemed building, lit a fire, while committing crimes....than why i have 4 dead firemen. The remainder of the crews from the next arriving Engine establish water supply, and start to ladder the building and force the covered windows open to see if they can locate victims without making entry. ONLY.. AND ONLY IF there is a victim visiable from the windows outside will I even slightly consider entry into the building, but there are many other factors.. the advancement of the fire, smoke signals, etc... Once those operations are complete... Call the sally wagon.. Set up the aerials... get mass transit for rehab & warmth.. prepare for a long night...
  3. SAD END TO A GREAT TILLER. That would take a great deal of money to restore into working order. I would image at least 50k - 75k
  4. OK guys & gals.. x635 took some great pictures during his photo hunt. Picture #1 - Barn Style Wodden Structure - This poses risks in many ways. There is something in this picture is very important to the first arriving. Who know's what it is? Those that know the answer, don't let's see who see the item. After the answers arrive.. What are some other risks with this structure. Picture #2 - This one is even more interesting. There are hazards out the ying yang here. Who can name them? Seth - As always.. thank you for sharing your images and finds with us. wow1_2.bmp wow2_2.bmp

  6. Good Job Bibbles.. For your information here is the explaination...
  7. Photo 2 Risks.. 1 - The Lean on the BRAVO exposure (we are looking at it from CHARLIE side). 2 - The nice high quality wooden porches to burn up when fire vents out side CHARLIE 3 - Seth.. Do you have Side ALPHA Photos. 4. Now that I look at it closer.. There is a great possibility that this building is a U shape. Seth, can you shed some light on this interesting building. 5. That tree.. that is a first for me. That could have roots growing into the walls and mortar work etc and be a significant risk to structual stability. hmmm
  8. Nutty.. do you have the answers..etc these are great examples of the construction styles we all have in the northeast. we all can learn from these..
  9. good job bibbles but you missed what i am looking for..

  12. The aerial super structure is huge. The tiller man definatly has his work cut out for him. I have tillered and that looks to be one of the more challenging rides to operate. Maybe it is the picture, but it appears longer than other tillers i have seen.
  13. So where are some pictures of the new tower? huh... well.. :-)
  14. the sutphen tiller tower http://forums.firehouse.com/attachment.php...mp;d=1139788252 the only picture i could locate through extensive google searches !! i have heard that it is sitting in the suthphen grave yard at the factory with the aerial device missing. It was a design by one of the elder sutphens, it obviously never took off. Cool Concept. Now.. If they only could make a tillered aerialscope.. now that would be the best :-)

  18. I can say I did about 12 years ago. Crafton Boro, Pittsburgh, PA. 4 Houses on Fire - No Alley to the Rear - I was the chauffer on the first arriving second alarm engine - we layed out from a hydrant on the parallel street to the houses that were behind the ones involved. We hand jacked 2 - 100' sections of 5" to (2) manifolds along with the 4 crosslays from our engine. We then had the other arriving second alarm units assisgned to our sector bring their crosslays to the rear and run them off our maifolds. They worked well. There were not too many complaints from the operating crews about pressure. Most were using smooth bore nozzles. The crews had their hands full. There was a significant amount of fire for all to take care of. I do not think that pressure on the line was a top priority on their minds. I have read in various fire service publications about departments in urban areas that have developed a hose hand cart and appliance cart for their shopping malls. On the appliance carts, they have placed several of these for various tactical considerations. We have a large mall and conference / convention center in the town that I have been a firefighter for about the last 12 years and we have not done that. We have a company that operates a mini pumper designed for use in the mall. I feel it is one of those items that you may only use once in a hundred years, but something your going to kick yourself in the behind for when you finally need it. It is heavy and expensive, but worth the expense. Train with it often to keep your operators and firefighters familiar with it. Types Of Calls for Use: Haz Mat: Portable Hydrant for Decon Area Large Fires with long stretches: Run 5" to it (no friction loss) then 4 same length layouts (if situation allows) to the fire. Rural Water Movement: Barns Etc: Just a few from the top of my head. Well good luck, hope that rambling helped you.
