  1. Elmsford Quad 2 was a 1957 Oren that was refurbished twice - once to the International cab and then a second time to repair some serious rust/rot and a complete white over lime paint job.

When the current Ladder 55 was purchased, the current Tower Ladder 21 was renamed from Quint 2 and Quint 2 was assigned to the new ladder. Unfortunately, the names Quint 2 and Quad 2 were retired due to the standardized apparatus naming conventions making Quint 2 the now Ladder 55.

When Quint 2 (L55) was purchased, the Workhorse (the Quad) was temporarily retired to the Highway Dept's parking lot until the County asked the area department's if they could 'loan' a spare pumper to the training center as their engine had problems. It was Quad 2 to the rescue - with both a pump and full compliment of ladders. The Workhorse spent about 10 months there assisting in both pumping and ladder training for countless classes.

For its entire life, the Quad was a truck wuth a manual transmission. There aren't many of those around anymore.

That was about when I moved from Elmsford and lost track of the 1957 Quad that was named "The Workhorse".

  2. As with an EMS run where there is potential for the rescuers to be in danger, you always need to ensure that the scene is safe BEFORE entering.

The PD is trained in how to deal with assaults and weapons - they even wear bullet-proof vests. I don't think your nomex/goretex turnouts will stop a bullet.

You're trained to run into a burning building to rescue a trapped person. The PD is trained to run into a hostile/volitle environment to defuse it and render it safe.

Now for the part about 'be as honest' that you said above:

WTF were you thinking?!?!?!?!?!? What if there was an assault?? What if there was a gun?? What if there were two people - one doing the assault and one at the door?? What if you and the others you ran in there with got shot?? Killed?? What would your families say?? Would your families get a death benefit if you were killed while working far outside the scope of your job?? Would your bosses bring you up on charges with the dept and/or union?? Is it worth losing your job??

    I'm done now.

  3. Westchester is crazy, I am switching to stewart in newburgh .Anyone ever flown out of there?

I just flew in/out of Stewart (SWF) last week and the departure on AirTran (6AM flight) was a breeze. I was even upgraded to Business Class. The return was a bit hectic though -- at 22:30, my AirTran flight, a JetBlue flight, and a US Air flight arrived all at the same time. They only had one baggage crew working and it took an hour just to get my bags.

Parking is a bit hokie too... They have the overflow lots now, but a single 10 passenger van (just one) making the rounds between the terminal and the two overflow lots just isn't enough. They need to get a few 30 passenger bus-type vehicles - at least 2 at a time.

Don't get me wrong - my drive to SWF from home in Wappingers Falls is a mere 25 minutes on a busy day. The convenience factor is certainly there!!

Just think, in addition to JetBlue, AirTran, Delta, AA, and USAir, a new player will be joining them in a few months: CONTINENTAL!!

I think once the PA takes over the operations, a lot of the issues will get better. On the flip side, a lot will also get worse.

The ridership out of Stewart has increased 312% since January (according the the Poughkeepsie Journal) as compared to previous years and is only going to grow further.

Once they start putting in more direct flights to other cities (they currently go to Atlanta, Philthadelphia, and I think Detroit) you'll see a larger increase. They should also start flying to Toronto at some point - they are an "international" airport you know.

And who knows - one day, the Space Shuttle may land there!! SWF is the 4th landing option preceded by Houston, Cape Canaveral, and White Sands, NM.

    Happy travels!!

  4. Looking on the condition of the front of the house (the white side that is), the windows are still intact, no smoke stains, and no melted siding, it does appear safe -- from this view only.

It does look like a deck fire, BUT if you look at the 2nd roof (rear of the house), there was significant extension into the structure which appears to be moving towards the front of the structure via the attic. You can see through the side of the house into the fully involved attic which appears to be fairly involved.

Since the flames are just blowing out of the gable vent, I would use EXTREME caution moving any further on that roof. An inspection hole would be the best choice with a trench somewhere to their left.

It does look like the power has been cut, which is a good thing.

  5. If those are two dams being overtopped in the picture, my colleagues in the DEP tell me that is a major hazard.  Overtopping can undermine the integrity of the dam and cause it to fail.  Obviously a bad thing!

Is that really a sewage pipe?  Where's it coming out of, Washington DC?  It's HUGE!

Is that the same "creek" that a woman fell into from a porch last month?

Both areas are considered water falls though much calmer under normal circumstances...

Yes, it's sewage, but I honestly have no clue where it stops - not sure I want to know either...

And yes, it's the same creek as last month - good thing the water wasn't nearly as bad as it is now.

  6. I took a drive around town late this afternoon (after the monsoon stopped) and snapped some pictures of two extremely swollen creeks - actually they're the same creek but in different locations

Anyway... by looking at the pictures, what bad things do you think could happen and what 'planning' would you do??

Bear in mind that the big red pipe is a massive sewage pipe (if my source is correct that is) and both brown-water-rapids flow under roadways.

I am not critiquing any department, person, whatever. I thought I would post the images for their content alone - to my knowledge, nobody has done anything wrong, right, or left.

  7. I cant wait. I remember coming home from school and watching it on re-runs, that was my favorite show. My friend and I would ride our bikes around pretending to be Ponch and John. I remember staying up one New Year's Eve watching a marathon. Cant wait!

Reruns???? I used to watch them first-run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I really feel old!!!! huh.gif

  8. Hey, I need some help here. I have a Mobile Kenwood radio that used to be mounted in a car. My guess is that the yellow wire was the power supply and the black wire goes to the speaker because the speakers wire it was connected to matches (correct me if im wrong). So my question is, how do I get this to work on house current/plug? Do I need a certain adapter? And is there an antene that needs to connect to this? Here are some pictures below.

That's just the radio's head. There should be a much larger 'box' with a cable on it to match the big plug you have on the back of the head unit you showed in the photos.

    Sorry man.

  9. this helps a lot  but I would really like a list of tone for all fd's in westchester

You could try contacting ESS or MetroCom to see if they'll 'give' you the list. Since they are (or were 7 years ago) the predominant radio installers for a large chunk of Westchester, they definately have the lists.

I've been out of the game for some time, but that's where I would start if the Internet doesn't provide what you're looking for (which it doesn't appear to).

  10. IMHO... a Mac is a great tool for anything graphics related. Since you're a shutterbug, you would do well with the Mac IF you planned on retouching/editing photos and/or creating 'presentations'.

The Mac is also a good tool for creating mega-websites. Mega being a site with lots of flash, etc...

I am a PC person. I prefer PCs, I know PCs, PCs are my job (you've seen my work @ HFD).

If you want a computer to do a little bit of everything, the PC is the way to go. If you are looking for something to do lots of graphic/photo stuff, the Mac is the way to go.

Of course you could get the Mac and install both OS-X and WindowsXP on it. It will definately work.

One downside to the Mac - you will need to buy all new software just for the Mac (if you use OS-X).

If you need anything PC, let me know...

  11. I must agree with EJS1810, Fire trucks are supposed to be red tongue.gif If I asked a kindergartner what color a firetruck is and told him he was wrong they are yellow......who knows what would happen laugh.gif

That just goes to show you... the education system is really lacking!! Fire engines are red, but Fire Trucks are yellow. laugh.gif

Having been on the Truck Committee for L55 (back in the day when it was called Quint 2)... the question was raised once - Red or Yellow. Guess who won!!! Suffice to say the question was asked by someone that wasn't from the Truck Company.

  12. New York State law states that any device "capable" of picking up police frequencies is illegal (except in certain situations). I have seen several people charged with a misdemeanor as a result of having a scanner in their vehicle.

When I took my HAM radio classes 11 years ago, there was an 'out' to that law - if you have a HAM license, you are permitted to have a scanner in your POV.

  13. I pay $9.95 a month for Napster. I figure it this way - it costs $12-$17 for a CD. If I download just one CD in a month, it's paid for itself.

There are some downsides to Napster as well as any other music site other than iTunes: you technically can't take the music off of the computer that it was downloaded on due to DRM security.

There are of course ways to remove the DRM security, but it is illegal and this is obviously not the forum to discuss it. Once it is removed though, the files can be added right to your iPod.
