  1. Interesting in the quote used for Yonkers on Jan. 25, 2005 it states FDNY as part of the mutual aid, this did not happen at this fire on Caryl Ave. FDNY responded at approx. the same time as Yonkers, FDNY received reports of fire in VanCortlandt Park and sent units to the location. Upon arrival FDNY found the fire was on Caryl Ave and they did respond to that location. However FDNY was not used at this time which I may add was a an error in judgement due to the location of this fire being on border of both cities. It takes a while for Yonkers units to respond to the southern most area. FDNY was sent back to Bronx and at no other time was FDNY on this location. I was saddened to watch the 11 O'Clock news and see the entire building involved in fire. FDNY for the record had a 3Engine and 2Ladder plus BC response for the box, manpower that most definetly would have helped early on.
  2. The first unit is on seagrave website as a demo for sale. The unit that we have seen in pictures has been accepted by FDNY with the changes mentioned. With this unit accepted the order will now move with the 2 per month coming in. until contract is done. The cable control issue was with the catails on demo, the new unit has 2 reels one on each side of boom that are used for wiring needed to operate controls and other features of basket. Older towers have 1 reel but with the improvements to design i assume they needed more wires and power to bucket. Hope this helps, also remember the firefighter on the pedestal can always take control of boom/bucket operation via foot pedal at base of unit.
  3. The 1st unit was rejected due to Cat tails and the greaseless boom. FDNY wants greaseable boom sections and didnt like the way the tails retracted, they could get snared on wires branches light poles etc. The new rigs seem to have 2 reels one on each side of the boom, the orange one pictured is new and in other photos you see the usual reel on the boom.
  4. From what I have been told L-138 and L-46 will receive the first 2 TL's when they start coming in, about 2 a month as per shop guys. L-46 has ST9703 as their regular rig now and it is in need of replacement, L-138 is 9702 i think.
  5. nycemt while i understand some members of fdny do assist dcas with testing process they are not the sole question makers. This test is a basic written test with books available at any public library or bookstore to read as a prep. This whole issue makes the members of fdny look ridiculous, i have almost 27 years and never looked at race, creed, color or anything when it came to doing the job. The issue here should anger all minority firefighters who passed the same tests as all others, they are not treated differently, they are brothers or sisters of the fdny. I cannot believe this issue has reared its ugly head again, this is not a secret society or a club that picks and chooses it players, this is a job you have to desire to do with knowledge of the risks and dangers, not black not white just doing what you are called to do.
  6. I cannot understand how a written test can discriminate. The test for FDNY is given by DCAS not the FDNY. The whole idea this is FDNY generated is a disgrace. The hiring process is not really conducted by FDNY the DCAS people administer the test and the physical part. FDNY does the medicals and investigation only after DCAS certifies a list to be used. This judge may become the new Sifton in what he will do to the FDNY. Time for Vulcans to grow up and be men and not expect things to be handed to them, too many great minority firefighters will know doubt be saddened by this change if it happens, no more merit system.
  7. Manning was restored 09:00 on January 2, 2010 to the 49 affected Engine Companies.
  8. Engine 81 carries decon equipment, life preserver, foam nozzle and some different length ropes. Things that are not used frequently but are to be carried in case needed. These new rigs do have large compartments and plenty of room for storage of equipment.
  9. Members on light duty are not included in medical leave percent, they are working light duty due to fact the cannot perform full duty. The numbers are UFA members only on medical leave.
  10. Most Front Line pieces are in service as per contract 10 full years, which translates to 11 years. They then are sent to spare pool where they stay until they are disposed of. In the pumper fleet they oldest front line are some remaining 1998's which are being replaced by seagrave order which has already started delivering units, about 50 or so are in. They Engines spares are 1993 and later years with the replaced 1998's being used now. The Tower Ladder's are the apparatus with rigs older than the contract requirements due to issues with seagrave and new designs. There are at least 4 1997 front line TL's in service as of now, needing replacement. Spare TL's are 1994 and up. The older 1989 and 90 TL's were disposed of.
  11. RIP Brother, God Bless His Family and the Members of YFD
  12. No doubt the civilian may be considered a hero, however everyone seems to forget about the Brother who went past the rooms involved in fire to reach the child, this civilian did not enter the burning apt. nor did he take the child down the fire escape. Only took him 1 floor down and handed him to the medically trained firefighters who took kid to ambulance asap. Great the kid survived and so on but the press is a little over blown in my humble opinion. check out fdnyinsider.com and read the firefighters story.
  13. Heard the Pizza has a certain SmokeyFlavoring with a tinge of Diesel added.
  14. This was second job in that area, first was at jerome ave and mosholu pkwy. Many of the units pictured are most likely relocators. E-66 and L-59 are not usually on Bainbridge Ave. Anyone have the rundowns for either job.
  15. I think there are a few 1999 aerials that will be the first to be replaced then onto 2000 and so on. The purchase of 20 is not too little or too much, remember of the 143 ladder companiies there are tillers, towers and the rearmounts. Not sure of numbers in total but there are 13 tillers and of the remaining 130 almost half i think are divided between tower and aerial.
  16. 10-30 in FDNY got a 2 Engine and 2 Truck response with a BC. If more was neede then a 10-75 was transmitted bringing 3rd Engine. Not sure if anything else was sent. Upon All Hands signal 7-5 Rescue and DC then responded. 10-75 today is request for 4 Engines, 2 Trucks 1BC, 1 Fast Truck, 1 Squad, 1 Rescue and Additional BC, Plus DC. Perhaps JBE can elaborate further. The 10-30 was removed in late 70's or early 80's.
  17. Yes it is a ladder over hose bed, 329 is remote from nearest truck company. Ladder 171 who shared quarters with E-329 was disbanded i think in 1970's. Similiar to E-70 shot with same ladder set up on an ALF, L-53 was shut in 1974 and reopend in 1985 or 1986 when E-85 was moved to city island and became L-53.
  18. The Oldest Tower Ladders in front line are 1997's TL-138, TL-46, TL-21 are in line for new rigs if they ever arrive. The order from Seagrave keeps getting pushed back due to redesign of the Aerialscope part now called AerialscopeII. The last TL'S the FDNY got had many problems with the Bucket controls and were out of service more than in for a long time, seems like they have finally found out problem and corrected. These were the 06 year TL'S, none have been delivered since then.
  19. Get Well Soon, Speedy Recovery.
  20. Can tell you that we are responding "blind" we are not sure what we are going to in some cases and getting turned around due to additional info reducing units. Special units ie: haz mat squads rescues are getting more runs and turned around in most cases. Water leaks with full assignments, ceiling collapses with full building collapse response. Runs without apartment or floor location in buildings, gas leaks transmitted as haz mat runs hope JBE can add his opinion hear.
  21. The Large Connection is the draft only hook up the left side is a gated 4 1/2 standard size hydrant hookup. The "hard tubes" are as follows: the lowest is our standard 10 foot 4 1/2 hydrant connection used to supply pumper from hydrant, we also carry 35 foot 5" hose to supply from hydrant. The next up suctions are all used for drafting only and are 6" fittings. These new pumpers have a special drafting connection on the Officers side panel. The upper two are flexible light weight new 6" connections, the other 6" is a hard connection used at pumper then attached to the flex hose which is then lowered into draft site.
  22. Thanks for taking pics of our new rig, here is one with all the hoseloaded ready for work
