  1. Myself and the mayor had some disagreements in reference to spending and a new response policy that he was putting into place in which the police would respond first and let dispatch know the situation. It didn't set well with me and in a private meeting in which the mayor ask for my resignation, he allowed the reporter from the local newspaper to sit in the meeting,The meeting was quoted word for word in the next edition of newspaper. What do you guys think? Has this happen to anyone else, how do you feel about the press setting in.

  2. So I see that you are having the same problem I am. No one wants to talk about it until it happens, and then its to late. But for instance, we run 3 twenty four hour trucks and one 16 hour truck on the 24/48 rotation. We have about 8-10 part time & prn. If one hole shift got sick which could very easily happen we have no back-up plan!

  3. It must be a slow day....... WHO CARES! What do you want to know next.....what the air pressure is in the driver's side rear tire of an NYPD precinct radio car? If you don't have anything to say, then wait until there is something worthy of saying. Don't start a topic just for the sake of starting a topic. You were correct..... LAME!

There is somethings that we all want to know, I don't ask alot of questions like this because I am afraid I would get reply's like the one above. Its the little things about a big operations that peaks my interest has well.

  5. Ok, I am kinda embarresed to tell this one, but here it goes, The ambulance service I work for is a three story building, we put Christmas lights up every year around the top of the building, but the roof condition is getting worse so we opted to get a construction lift, drill holes and put eye hooks in them to secure the christmas lights this year. So we rented the bucket lift and things were going well, so on the 2nd day, the day before thanksgiving we (myself and my chief) up in the bucket finishing up with the job and the lift just shut off. We were fully extended, but was in the process of moving the lift so we wasnt close to the building. So luckly our mechanic was there, so he thought we was just out of gas, so he added some and still couldn't get the machine started. So then it started to rain. A call was placed to the rental company and they sent out a mechanic, and wouldnt you guess, they couldnt get it started either, so they tried to let us down manualy but they stupid thing had vapor locked, so we put in a call to the City Fire Dept for their 114' Bronto. To make a long story short, all the crews was out laughing, the newspaper was there, and we made the front page, stepping from the lift to the bronto. So things can go real bad on these lifts, I am living proof!

Chris I agree with you 100%, This is a great site!

Take for instance a radio station, how do they pay the bills - ad's

Sometimes no matter how annoying they are, they pay the bills!

  7. A very intresting show! They have a very dangerous job, did anyone catch the episode when they were stringing the line with the helicopter and it got hung, wow! I got nervous for them...

Looks like a new season of Ice Road Truckers and Deadliest Catch should be coming on very soon!

  8. My two, no, five cents:

First - we are entrusted to protect the public at all times. Just because fire apparatus is used in a funeral procession doesn't mean that communities aren't protected. It is our first and foremost responsibility to the public. You send people to a funeral if you can. And, most members attend funerals on their own time, so the cost to the taxpayer is limited to fuel (and only then if the department sends a vehicle).

Second - I do not in any way equate the fact that when someone who who puts his/her life on the line for protecting the public dies executing that mission is a display of arrogance when that person is honored by his/her profession. That defies logic. When people, firemen, police, EMS workers, soldiers, or just plain citizens who do good for others die, their wakes and funerals are crowded. People come out to honor those who give. Think of an ordinary citizen who is known in the community for being a giving person. The public turns out in droves. In the fire service, why can't come out to honor those who selflessly gave their lives. And, I bet that there were a lot of other mourners present who were not members. I guess that they too must be arrogant?

Third - I bet that the person who wrote that letter to the editor would change his tune if he became a firefighter. Once he understands the commitment, the culture, and the ultimate sacrifice, he will change his mind. It is very easy for someone who has absolutely no understanding for what we do to complain. Put him in a fire and he will get religion.

Fourth - I know that if I die a LODD, I would hope that I was respected enough to have a good send off. That is a small request for making the ultimate sacrifice. Think of the spouse who lost the member. Wouldn't a great turnout be somewhat comforting? My department has had several non-LODD deaths this year. The fire service showing up at the wake, funeral, etc made a lasting impact were bright spots on very tragic life changing events for relatives. Members who die in the line of duty deserve the same.

Fifth - It is not unusual for me to be delayed for a few minutes while a long funeral procession of any kind passes. So you get delayed by a few minutes. Will 50 people be shot at dawn because of this? It is a minor inconvenience. This guy should just chill.

I agree with you 1000%! You have some very valid points!

Its symbolic, Its just become the norm for our fallen brothers and sisters!

I hope this tradition carries own, not saying that I want any LODD's, just saying that if they happen we should know that we will be there for our fallen brothers & sisters.
