  1. I was junior in college on that day. I was just about to go to class when my next door neighbor said my god they flew a plane into the WTC. I turned on my tv fast saw Tower 1 burning, thinking nothing of it. I turned off the TV and went to class. I too remeber hearing stories about a B-25 flying into the Empire State building. So my feeling was if the Empire State building can handle a bomber flying into it, tower 1 can handle this. Ironically enough the class I went to that day was Religion and Politics and the lecture was about the Muslim faith. About 20 minutes into class a professor stormed into my room started to scream "They just flew a plane into the Pentagon and the other tower and they're going come for all of us!!!" Needless to say we all ran from the class and to the nearest tv. I will never forget the horror and the sad silence in the room as the towers fell. Moments like this will be ingrained for us forever. God bless those who went in while thousands were running out. God bless the troops who are fighting so this day will never happen again.

  2. Also look at University of Maryland, a guy I went to college with transferred there to get his fire science degree. From what other firefighters in Delaware and Maryland have said its a really good program. There is also a station on College Park's campus that allows students to ride.

  3. The call probably got dispatched as a minor mva no fire apparatus needed but when the ambulance got to the scene they realized they needed the extra backs. So yes you are right the engine was there for BLS support. The ems crew was following BMFD's protocol for lift assists where they call for eng 92 or Res 37 depending on what side of the village the call is on. Regarding Archville's district, as far as I know there district covers the extreme southern end of the Sleepy Hollow Country Club (with the district line virtually going through the horse stables). They also cover Sleepy Hollow rd and the extension up until the borders of the Village of Briarcliff and Sleepy Hollow. I don't know if AFD's district includes Phelps are not but they do protect most of Rockfeller Park by the river and the old IBM building which I think is now New York Life. They have a mutual aid agreement with Pocantico Hills for all structure calls. There is an agreement with Briarcliff, where Eng 92 responds as requested by Archville's IC to the scene of MVA's. Since Archville was not dispatched for this mva the IC most likely was the ambulance's crew chief who requested the help for lifting. I also want to point out that the majority, if not all, of Archville's fire district is covered by Briarcliff Ambulance. If I missed anything I'm sure engine 235 or any member of Scarborough Engine Company will correct me. Hope this has been helpful.

  4. Really bad fire I remember was the Main St fire in Ossining in 1995. The old Kipps Pharmacy building and two other buildings caught fire. I believe it was started by a spark in the wiring in a dentist office. It seemed like they were there for 3 days putting out the fire. Another large fire that I have heard from and surprised people haven't posted yet was the GM plant fire of 1968 where the fire was so intense it melted the plastic on the Sleepy Hollow trucks.

  5. I talked to a fellow firefighter in my department who just so happened to be a Mount Vernon volunteer firefighter. I showed him the posting about John Maeder and he rattled off a couple things he remembered about him. He remembered him being a captain MVFD Co. 5 and he further talked about how John was an extremely rich man for that time period. John was so rich that he wanted to buy himself a brand new firetruck and respond by himself. He did not know John ever had a job because of his wealth that he inherited. He did not get any further because he had not been in contact with John in over 35 years and his memory was kind of rusty, but he was going to talk to one of his friends who also is an old MVFD volunteer and see what he remembers of John Maeder. I'll post more when I get more info from my fellow firefighter. We both hope this was helpful.
