  1. Very easy to get a card in CT.

You need to go to the CT DOH EMS site, they have a form to fill out - you need to send it to NYS DOH to get verification of your EMT card... then you submit it to CT, and bing, bang, boom. I believe they give you recporpsity until your NY card expires.

I didnt' have to take any refreshers in any specific time.

You can also use NY/CT recert classes against each other -- so take it in one state, submit paperwork to the other state, and they'll extend your card.

  2. I rode with one of these depts for a few months... very solid operations.

There is definitely a lot of apparatus and departments in the area, but they're not sitting around collecting dust. The depts have roles and responsibilities laid out, mutal aid plans (a lot of automatic), and it's a collaborative effort to cover the large area. They're in a constant "growing pain" as many of our volunteer agencies are... they're not seeing 100 people turn out to an AA, let alone a job...

There's also some first response EMS that's done with some of the depts. Article fails to mention too that some of these depts are supplemented with day time paid staff, i'm sure that affects their budget!

I do agree there could probably be some apparatus consolidation, but as noted, a lot of these depts have already done a lot of consolidation.

For example, one of the depts (one of the busier I think) Latham FD has already run 197 fire calls and 211 EMS calls.

And regarding Colonie Mall... when I was up there a few years ago, that place was a deserted diaster waiting to happen! (Sorry, was thinking about the Latham mall...)

  3. In the future these cars might see service East of New Haven, on the Shoreline East. They are capable, in practice, of running over the Hell Gate Bridge into Penn, but this is not slated for any time in the near future.

I thought I read that they can actually run all the way up to boston?

What's special about the hell gate bridge that requires specalized equipment?

  4. Have not seen this posted on here yet...Curious what everyone thinks of this article.

    http://openchannel.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/01/15/5843330-the-emergency-response-in-tucson-timeline-shows-ambulance-delays

I think MSNBC does a decent job showing that there wasn't a delay in a single point, but a series of legitimate delays that often put the blame on "EMS being slow" (IE: Scene Safety, MCI not being officially declared, etc.)

    Thoughts?

  6. Most of the "citizens" of LOHUD just baffle me with their ignorance...

Comments that "the building would have been saved if the FD was REALLY on scene in 3min" is nuts.

I must have been mis-trained... I wans't aware that as a FF you can jump off a truck, walk into a burning building the second you get there and Taadaaaa.... the fire is out and the world is back to normal!

Who cares about things like primary searches... or even those things that carry water and need to be hooked up and brought to the location of the fire... oh yeah, those hoses things!
