WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court has ruled that white firefighters in New Haven, Conn., were unfairly denied promotions because of their race, reversing a decision that high court nominee Sonia Sotomayor endorsed as an appeals court judge.

New Haven was wrong to scrap a promotion exam because no African-Americans and only two Hispanic firefighters were likely to be made lieutenants or captains based on the results, the court said Monday in a 5-4 decision. The city said that it had acted to avoid a lawsuit from minorities.

The ruling could alter employment practices nationwide, potentially limiting the circumstances in which employers can be held liable for decisions when there is no evidence of intentional discrimination against minorities.

  2. I too took the train in to the game Saturday. Took it in from Darien.

Went smoothly, wasn't too crowded coming down (I took the last local train north of Stamford).

New station at yankee stadium is pretty nice, I was laughing that they had numerous automated announcements that you cannot bring open containers outside of the station and they must be discarded before you left.

It's about a 5-10 min walk (depending on pedestrian traffic) to the stadium -- cops keep the flow of people controlled pretty well.

Coming back, train was waiting right at the station - pretty packed solid, standing room only.

Only downside to the train... is you're forced to stay the entire game since the trains run along with the game progress. They didn't really tell you either what would happen if there were a rain delay or cancellation, I wonder if they'd have us waiting for potential hours if they were to delay the game? No idea.

Overall though, good experience. Much better than fighting parking and traffic and the subway!

Imagine living in a place where there's no emergency medical system.

It's where suffering a heart attack or a car accident often means someone calls the hospital directly and a first responder with no more medical training than a taxi driver is dispatched to pick you up.

Very interesting to see this! Great to see the global outreach!

Currently, officials are reviewing the legal options and planning to present a full report in early April - options like a consolidated county-wide police force or bringing in the State Police.

The mayor said there is another option - and that would be declaring martial law. The governor would have to declare it and then the National Guard would come in. The mayor said it's more for a transition to a new police force if that were to happen.

  6. Not sure if anyone was watching the Fox 5 News at 10 tonight... but they had a ludicrous story about a "crazy ambulance driver" based out of Peekskill VAC.

I don't have any info on the story online, can't find it posted.

Pretty much it showed an ambulance "driving crazy" to a cardiac arrest "speeding through stop signs" and "blowing red lights" while following an engine that was directly in front of it... The video then shows the ambulance driver lighting up a cigarette in the driver seat.

Must be a slow news day...

    updated article regarding the incident.

EAST GREENBUSH - The 22-year-old Connecticut man who opened fire on police with an assault rifle on Interstate 90 Saturday taunted police to kill him as he shot at them.

Darrel O. Brown of Hartford remains at Albany Medical Center Hospital in a comatose state and is not expected to survive his injuries, Maj. William S. Sprague, commander of State Police Troop G said Monday.

Brown was shot numerous times by a police SWAT team, troopers said. A State Police sharp-shooter ended the incident firing one shot into Brown's head from a .308 caliber scoped rifle, Sprague said.

  8. The show was interesting to see what goes on "behind the scenes" to what we see everyday -- always up for learning more about that type of stuff.

What I was kind of bothered by though was the exposure to the way the gov't is spending its resources -- do we really need 6 people doing an all out manhunt for 6 mexican proclaimed gang members? I dont know... Rubbed me the wrong way a bit.

(No, i'm not saying that we should leave our borders unprotected, just wondered about the amount of resources needed for it for the overall good for all)

  9. With that being said, I've done it as professional courtsey at points... If i'm in an ambulance responding to a FD driven call (IE MVAs), I'll pull over to let the FD pass (even if I'm responding too)... but if I'm first responding with the FD to a medical emregency, i'll pull over to let an ambulance pass.

Maybe i'm just nice though :o

I'd never PASS another moving, responding vehicle though.

Over the past 18 months, at least 129 ambulance attendants across the U.S. have been accused of sex-related crimes on duty or off, an investigation by The Associated Press found. Some of them molested patients in the back of an ambulance.

"It's a dream job for a sexual predator," said Greg Kafoury, a Portland, Ore., lawyer who represents three women who were groped by a paramedic. "Everything is there: Women who are incapacitated, so they're hugely distracted. Medical cover to put your hands in places where, in any other context, a predator would be immediately recognized as such."

While I understand there are some MAJOR sickos among us in our profession... I feel like the way this article protrays EMS is that we are all out to have some 'extra fun' with our patients.

    SIGH....... <_<

  11. I think it's time boys and girls for many of these municipalities to seriously consider hiring full time ffs. even if it's Career Chauffers to start. You can't tell me these Towns/Villages don't have the $$$$ to pay for a Career Dept. with the exorbitant amount of $$$$ their taxpayers are paying. Where's the money going? Just think how quickly the response time would be, not only if the closest station was dispatched but had their apparatus manned 24/7/365. I'm sure you'd see a big difference, especially in those areas that have an inadequate water supply and rely on Tankers.

What the heak does district boundry issues have to do with career vs volunteer?!!? Stop trying to turn it into one of these fights!

if you look at the response times, they actually were not that bad.

AND -- Just to throw it out there -- If you had career FFs in Millwood *AND* Yorktown, there would STILL be no difference because of the time it took for yorktown to get from their station to the fire... your point is totally skewed.
