  2. If I am not mistaken, E61 along with U65 E58 2392/3 were already operating at another accident on I 95 north bound, Engine 14, 59, and 62 were dispatched to the rollover with R40 and Greenwich. There was also a rollover the night before around midnight on Boston Post Road at Regent Street in Port Chester, was a busy 12 hours.

Just as units were returning from I-95... E59, E64, R40, & Rye Brook were dispatched to IFO Blind Brook H.S. for a roll-over. As soon as the call came in, 2392 said that himself & E61 would also respond. E59 was on scene with Greenwich FD units and returned R40 & E64 when they arrived on scene.

Just to note... about two hours later, we were dispatched to an MVA on 287E. Nothing serious though.

  3. Unless I'm mistaken, Engine 14 is a Rye Brook F.D. unit. That is an interesting response though, Three Different Departments from Two States with career guys and volunteers. Slightly off topic, do the paid guys in Port Chester run Utility 65? Thanks.

U-65 is run by volunteers from various companies in Port Chester. It is the Ex R-30 from Purchase FD

  4. House explosion in Carlinville kills two, injures three

    By JIM SUHR

CARLINVILLE, Ill. - A woman and her young grandson were killed and two of her sons were seriously burned Wednesday in an explosion that destroyed their home, moved walls in nearby buildings and could be heard miles away.

While utility workers and the state fire marshal's office were still working to verify the cause, Carlinville Police Chief David Haley said his department was treating it as a natural gas explosion.

In addition to the family members in the destroyed home, an 88-year-old woman from a neighboring home was taken to a hospital with cuts.

The explosion occurred about 7:30 a.m. in this community of 5,800 people 60 miles northeast of St. Louis, transforming the site where the house stood into a crater filled with charred, splintered wood. A bathtub was overturned inside the pit, and two blackened vehicles were parked nearby.

Debris from the explosion was strewn in yards within a one-block radius _ everything from insulation to a frying pan to a sink and a leg from a kitchen table.

Bob Eskew, who lives a couple houses northeast of the destroyed home, said he was working on a computer when he "heard two loud explosions, kind of like an F-16 flying over real low."

His house shook, some of his front windows shattered, and "I came outside and saw a lot of fire, a lot of damage, a lot of smoke."

Police identified the dead as 55-year-old Margaret Hatlen, whose body was found in the basement of the destroyed home, and her 9-year-old grandson, Michael Albracht.

Haley said the woman's two sons were hospitalized: a 27-year-old with burns over 30 percent of his body and a 15-year-old who was severely burned. Both victims were flown to Memorial Hospital's burn center in Springfield, about 55 miles away.

Police believe a natural gas leak was the cause because Haley said residents of the home detected the smell Tuesday night but apparently didn't call the utility. Shortly before the explosion, residents about a block from the scene said they smelled gas and were in the process of notifying the utility when the blast occurred, Haley said.

The police chief did not specify how he knew the residents of the destroyed home smelled gas.

Leigh Morris, a spokesman for St. Louis-based Ameren Corp., the supplier of natural gas and electrical service through its AmerenIP subsidiary, said the company had reviewed its records and received no reports of anyone calling about a suspected gas leak in the neighborhood.

He said Ameren would leave it up to state authorities to determine a final cause of the blast, but that utility employees were assisting in the investigation.

A spokeswoman for the state fire marshal's office said that agency's investigators were on the scene, but she had few immediate specifics.

About 220 AmerenIP customers in Carlinville lost their electrical power about 7:40 a.m. when an Ameren employee cut the service after the explosion downed a primary distribution line, posing a possible threat to emergency responders. Service was restored by early afternoon, he said.

Kevin Walker runs a computer and Internet business from a building located caddy corner from the destroyed house. He said he was on his way to work when a friend called and told him of the explosion.

"When I got here it was completely leveled," he said. "There were flames probably 40 feet in the air. I've never seen anything like it before."

Inside his business, Walker said, he found computer parts knocked to the floor by the concussion. The windows were blown out and the back wall was separated from the ceiling and bowed outward.

Haley said a total of at least 15 homes suffered some damage.
