  1. Personally, Wheeled Coach is my sh*t list of ambulance manufacturers. I've had a number of bad experiences and have not been impressed by their shoddy craftsmanship. Either way, it is nice to see other makers stepping up and helping the industry when Ford left us high and dry.

I think it was International that left Ford high and dry because of the new 2007 EPA ratings on the Diesel engines and wanted more money for them

  2. Seth,

We just took delivery of our first 2008 chassis. The exterior, especially the nose takes some getting used to-there is quite a difference between 07 & 08. The interior I give an A+ for the changes made that provide a better and convenient work environment. The best part I would have to say is that the new diesel engine is so so quiet its great. after 8 hours and 90 miles a night the banging of the diesel of yesterday really suck compared to the 08.

  5. ALF is as sole source as Peirce, Seagrave and E-One. How did you get Spartan in there? Crimson fire apparatus is owned by Spartan Motors. LTI is owned by ALF and all LTI aerials are built at ALF's plant in Ephrata PA. Now if you spec hybrid Spartan/ALF aerial you're the problem not them. By your statement only E-One built most aerials that aren't disasters. And E-One does have a great aerial history with no catastrophic failures. Most of the biggies have bought up previous aerial companies and used their ladders to badge as their own.

BTW who builds transmissions and motors for your preferred apparatus builder?

Well put. As most have seen it's the fire departments who spec the units not the builders as they are build they way they are told.

  6. Thanks for the feedback guys.

Rosenbauer America is made up of: Central States quickly grew to a company of 230 dedicated employees with 120,000 sq. ft. of production area producing hundreds of units annually. Today, Rosenbauer Central Division produces a full line of apparatus including pumpers, tankers, rescue vehicles, aerials, and specialty vehicles.

In 1995, General Safety formed a partnership with Rosenbauer International, who is headquartered in the town of Linz, Austria. Rosenbauer is also a family owned company, and has been in business for over 130 years. With production sites and/or partnerships in over 14 countries worldwide, Rosenbauer is one of the largest and most respected companies in our field.

In 1998, another partnership was formed with Central States Fire Apparatus of Lyons, South Dakota. While General Safety’s emphasis is still on customized vehicles, the partnership with Central has provided the company with the combined largest product line in the industry.

In 1988, Rob and Pam Kreikemeier founded R.K. Aerials with only three employees and a 5,000 square-foot building. Today, the company employs 80 professionals working in a 40,000 square-foot facility.

The Rosenbauer Aerials Division produces the highest quality aerial ladders and platforms available in mid-mount or rear-mount designs. They offer ladders in 60, 75 and 109 ft. lengths, and platforms in 85 or 104 ft. lengths. Click here to view Rosenbauer Aerials video.

  7. Another good reason to turn all the lights and other accessories off when you're sitting in a driveway or other location where the emergency warning devices aren't needed...

I don't know why everyone picks on Ford. No worse than GMC - Garage Mans Curse.

I am glad everyone was okay

  8. while we are talking about pet peves today why do so many areas feel that it is neededto transport an ALS PT in a vollie bus with the Medic onboard.  I understand if it as an intercept on the way to the hospital but there are several areas in Dutchess that you hear XYZ Fire enrout ALS medic on board.

I have several problems with this.

    1. why wait for the medic on the scene if you are going to transport then get moving delay in PT transport for a medic is still a delay in transport

    2. If you are waiting on the scene or the medic gets on the scene before you get the PT packaged why take 2 units out of service for 1 PT. not a good idea  since the ALS unit is the unit that was probably going to cover your district while the BLS unit was out.

this is also a issue with resources with the trend in fuel cost why are we waisting fuel since fuel is one of the number one issues that fire commisioners complain about since it one of the easiest to control

Up here in Nova Scotia sometimes two ambulances will respond on an emergency call. The first is code 1 and the second is code 2. The reason behind it is for ease of extricating the patient from the residence. It is sometimes easier with 4 Paramedics versuses two. Especially when oxygen and IV's are required.

Most of the 300 fire departments do not do MFR so EHS NS is on it's own unless an agreement is in place with the area fire department.

Plus out of the 300 fire departments only about 10 have paid staff and the rest are volunteer.

  9. Again back in the day I had to TXP a PT from WMC to UPENN Hospital for a liver transplant. The PT was stable and it was a Thurs night I think in the summer. Anyway traffic was backed up on the Garden State and I asked my partner to turn the lights and sirens on so we could get out of the traffic. Well we got pulled over and my partner was really nervous and she asked me what to do. I said that I would talk to the Trooper. He was cool and I told them we had to be at the hospital at a certain time because of the Liver. He said that unless we had a permit to drive with lights and sirens on in NJ that we had to turn them off. In return he told us just to drive fast and said he was going to tell some other troopers what our deal was. That was pretty cool.

That article was great and got me thinking. Most PD's and I think even FD's have a EVOC course. I know that was the best time beating the crap out of cars but you also learn what most cars can do and how to react to certains situations. I know an ambulance is different and I know Fire Trucks are huge but there more and more Fly Cars being used and I think that a formal class should be a requirement for ALL EMERGENCY VEHICLES. Just because you have been driving and AMB, Fire Truck doesn't make you DALE Jr.

I agree - Up here in Nova Scotia it's either lights and siren Code 1 or no lights and siren code 2.

Also on/off topic I have been in Massachusetts where some fire departments return to the station after a call with lights on and no siren. Question is WHY???

  10. The Canadian facility was purchased within the past 4 or 5 years from another manufacturer who used Spartan Chassis quite a bit to mount thier stainless bodies.  Works well given the amount of salt on the road in that part of Canada.

It's in a town named Carleton Place in Ontario on the Quebec border.  The town is VERY small.  I drive through it on the way to my hunting and fishing camp in the back bush of Quebec.

It always looked like they had a ton of work in progress though, so I'm assuming that they were a good purchase for Seagrave.

It used to be called Almonte Fire Apparatus

  11. any pics of them?

ino that demers is big in canada

There are four other manufacturers up here in Canada.

Tri Star Industries right here in Yarmouth where I live: http://www.tri-star.ca/

They product all the ambulances used in the provinces of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island on a long term lease contract. That is the ambualnces are used for three years and 60, 000 KMS and switched and exchanged.

    Malley's in New Brunswick: http://www.malleyindustries.com/

They produce the ambulances in New Brunswick under a province wide contract.

    Crestline in Saskatchewan: http://www.crestlinecoach.com/

    Medevac: http://www.medevac-rescue.com/

  12. I don't enjoy looking at it so far...will keep checking back...but for now it is ugly.

The CAD drawings are more pleasing...maybe it was the color at first glance.

That's what I thought about the Pierce Quantum but it grows on you after a while so give it a chance.

  13. I assume you are referring specifically to apparatus...?  If not go walk through the Grand Street Firehouse in Croton, you can see low bid construction at it's worst.

Low bid means it all depends on who is paying the bill.

One department up here had a committee to spec a truck and changes were made that the committee were not happy about but since they don't pay the bill it's up to town council who approves the tender.

THe other question is How many town Fathers and councillors actually have ever used the truck being spec'd
