  1. Agrees, it is very rare for an agency to be able to get buses out consistently and several at a time. I also know there are paid EMS agencies (either full staffing or just en EMT or Driver, etc) that can not get a bus out with paid help. Agencies that can not get rigs out, do not have rehab units, or special-ops units, or several buses...or at least they shouldn't.

    Agreed!

As for the thread topic. I think it is very important for agencies with Rehab units to meet with surround officials. This often does not lead to change...not sure why, but it's the truth. I really believe it just comes down to the fact that a lot of Westchester agencies are not proactive for what ever reason. This is a big issue in the emergency service community. 99% of the time nothing changes until an incident occurs. Why is this? Why risk life when you can be proactive and change stuff in advance and as a precaution?

Yes it is sad, we are not proactive but instead reactive and thats what hurts us as a whole.

  2. From my experience, I would have to disagree with your paid EMS claim. Why should an EMS agency go paid and have enough staff to get one bus out instantly when an agency that is 100% volunteer can get 3 busses and a rehab out at the same time 24/7. I do not feel it is a matter of people receiving pay checks but rather a matter of good leadership, good moral, and most importantly good recruitment. The heart and driving factor behind good EMS operations is not a pay check, it is commitment, membership, and leadership.

That is very rare to have 3 buses and a rehab unit out 24/7 I dont know of many agencies that can do that. Sure some can do it and I have seen it done before but I highly doubt any volunteer angency can do that 100% of the time.

But back to the original question maybe its a matter of the ems agencies going to meet the chiefs of the surrounding departments and explaining the importance and benefits of having the rehab and ems units on the 1st alarm assignment. So that they are automaticly dispatched and it is one less thing for the IC to think about.

  5. So how exactly are other Westchester County EMS Agencies staffed to take calls???

In my dept. we have a paid EMT on call from 0600 hours Monday till 0600 hours Saturday. Drivers come down when the pager goes off. (I would have to say that 80% of the time they are hanging out at the firehouse anyway.) We usually don't have a problem getting the first bus out the door during these hours but if we get hit with a second call thats where we get stuck.

Saturday and Sundays are covered by volunteer EMTs and Drivers. We tried to have a sign up for duty crews(for weekends/drivers during the week/and a second crew during the week) but haven't had much luck with people signing up. So I guess my question to all of you is what do you do to get your people to sign up for shifts? And how long is each shift?

  6. As for right now and past years...we have not had a problem getting our busses out. Often having all three out at the same time during the day or night doing calls for either our town or surrounding towns. As far as waves of young members...as long as you have a good strong recruitment program than the "waves" should be minimal. Some of the Mount Pleasant agencies do indeed have trouble getting their buses out. One even has paid EMT's and still has trouble getting a bus out. running roughly 980 calls and M/A roughly 10 I'd say is acceptable. I understand that agencies go through waves of membership and coverage but...that is avoidable.

More than 1 Mt. Pleasant agency has paid EMT's and from what I hear on the scanner and being a member of one those agencies I don't see much of a problem with getting 1 bus on the road in a fair amount of time. Now getting the 2nd one out is a different story. (I'm not saying this is ok at ALL) No agency is perfect and I'm not bashing PVAC at all, I have a lot of friends in that agency and maybe it was prior to your membership but it wasn't to long ago (maybe 5 or 6 months ago) where PVAC just like every other VAC in Westchester had a very hard time covering calls, and spoke of hiring EMT's. Fortunately you guys DID get a wave of new members and since then been able to cover 2 or 3 calls at a time. I will be the first person to admit that my agency has had its fair share of issues with covering calls but we have made some adjustments and hired some EMT's. Our system is not perfect nor do I think it ever will be but we have made a lot of progress from the days of us not being able to cover a call AT ALL.

  7. The Mamaroneck Emergency Medical Services (MEMS) signed a contract this morning to renew it's commitment to serve the Mamaroneck Ambulance District, said MEMS Captain Nikki Deshensky. They have signed a 3-year contract with a 2-year option for extension

  9. With Memorial Day just over, the local grave yards are newly cleaned & decorated; the American Legion, VFW & youth groups placed new flags on the Veterans Graves, and the FD did the same on the deceased firefighters graves. One family member asked why there aren't any markers for deceased members of the rescue squad. A few years ago we looked into the bronze grave markers for EMS & discovered there are none made. I was hoping that someone might have found a foundry that will cast a Star of Life gravestone marker, or know of a business that sells them. Being cheap, we don't want to have to pay a casting fee (iircc is over $400). If anyone has any info or can suggest a company, please do so. Thanx.

Can you be a little more specific as to what you are looking for? I am in the memorial business and can possibly help you.
