  1. Say what you want about FDMV but I don't see how their staffing issues are any different from the rest of Westchester. Just listen to the scanner and you'll hear plenty of departments who have to be retoned 2 or 3 times before they even get the staffing that FDMV has. Mount Vernon probably does a better job with what they have then some departments who claim they don't have any manpower issues.

  4. How many Mask Service Units does Yonkers have. I noticed in the posts for the fire at 24 Caryle Ave and yesterdays fire at 72 Wendover Rd, it mentions MSU-2. Is the same one that runs out of School St. or is there now a 2nd one.

  5. Worker trapped, both legs broken in Greenburgh collapse

    THE JOURNAL NEWS

    (Original publication: December 10, 2005)

GREENBURGH — Four workers were injured yesterday when a wall they were demolishing collapsed, trapping one of the men and crushing both of his legs beneath a pile of concrete.

Greenville firefighters responded at 11:59 a.m. to 100 High Point Road, said Fire Chief Dan Raftery, whose men had to plow through the snow to get emergency vehicles to the private home, which was undergoing remodeling work. The house was at the top of a steep hill at the end of a dead-end street.

"When we got here, we found one man pinned pretty badly with a large section of a wall laying on top of him," Raftery said. "It took us about 10 to 15 minutes to free him because he was trapped underneath several large concrete blocks."

Greenburgh police Lt. Vincent LoGiudice said the 42-year-old Brooklyn man suffered compound fractures to both legs. He was transported to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, along with two other men, also from Brooklyn, who suffered less severe leg injuries. A fourth injured man declined medical assistance.

Town Supervisor Paul Feiner said a stop-work order was issued at the site. He also said building officials intended to issue a summons for working without a permit once they established who initiated the demolition work.

Feiner said a company had applied for a building permit that had not yet been approved, but that Building Department officials had not yet established who should be cited and were withholding the name of the permit applicant pending the outcome of their investigation.

Officials from the federal Occupational Safety & Health Administration's Tarrytown office were also called in to investigate, LoGiudice said.

  6. Allingtown is fairly busy. I'm not sure exactly how many runs they do. There are 5 career FF's per shift to man the TL, engine & rescue. The volunteer house is only about a 5-10 minute walk from campus depending on where your dorm is. The volunteer engine responds on all calls except EMS & MVA's. Allingtown FD does a great job especially considering the financial issues. Due to money issues, they don't issues gear to UNH students, however, if you bring your gear from your home department, they will cover any damage that happens to it.

  7. from what I see, West Haven looks to be a very large fire department. But Allingtown which I guess is a company within WHFD, is right around the corner from UNH. So If I go to college down there, I would be able to apply for membership for that fire department? Does anyone have any more information on the bunk program down there? Thanks.

The city of West Haven has three seperate fire districts: Allingtown, West Shore and West Haven Center. All three are combination departments. UNH is in Allingtown's district. They run a Tower Ladder, Engine & Rescue out of H/Q and an engine out of a second house. The second house is manned by the volunteer members, H/Q is run by the paid FF's. I think West Haven center runs a bunking program but I don't know any of the details. I am currently a member of Allingtown. They don't have a bunking program, bu they do allow volunteer FF's to spend the night & ride out of the paid house. I don't really know too much about what the other two departments run and how they are staffed

  9. I'm not sure if GFD538 would agree but when I went there it was a suitcase college where everyone left on the weekends and I know UNH's social side is a little down

Yeah it's still like that but they seem to be trying pretty hard to change that.

when you first arrive in West Haven you'll get use to living in the ghetto.

I know what you mean. But I was comfortable enough to walk to the New Haven train station by myself granted it was daylight. Also the campus police & West Haven PD do a good job of keeping the area safe.

Since 2002 they have added 3 new dorms, so alot of the living facilities are modern.

Thankfully I am in the newest dorm on campus. It is the only one with A/C and has a Dunkin Donuts & Quiznos in it.

I would definitly recomend that anyone who is interested take a trip up for the day or come to an open house. The only problem with the open house is that it is not always a true representation of what the school is truely like.

  10. I'm curently a sophomore at the University of New Haven. It has an excellent Fire Science program. They offer majors in Arson Investigation, Fire Dept. Admin. & Fire Protection (sprinker systems, alarm systems etc.). I am majoring in Arson Investigation right now, but at the end of the semester I plan on adding Fire Admin. (Its only 6 extra courses which can be taken as elective courses. UNH is only about an hour or so from Westchester. If you want any more info let me know.

  11. I will hear Greenville engine 150 going to runs and I won’t hear ladder4 that whole day. Then other days I will hear both going

Both E150 & L4 are staffed by paid firefighters. Greenville also has volunteers who respond to calls.

I was wondering which departments are paid and how much of that department is paid.

To the best of my knowledge:

    Fully Paid:

    New Rochelle

    Yonkers

    Mount Vernon

    Combination:

    Greenville

    Hartsdale

    Fairview

    Scarsdale

    Eastchester

    Port Chester

    Town of Mamaroneck

    White Plains

    Mohegan

    Rye Brook

    Peekskill

    Pelham

    Pelham Manor

    Larchmont

    Rye

    ....Sorry if I missed any

  13. At the end of the day we need more indians, NOT CHIEFS

A Battalion Coordinator is not a chief and should not be confused with one. They are simply there to assist the chief with mutual aid, obtaining additional resources and if necesary relaying informataion to 60 Control. They do not make any firegound related decisions.

  14. School bus ignites in Mount Pleasant; 3 escape injury

    By LANNING TALIAFERRO

    THE JOURNAL NEWS

    (Original publication: October 24, 2005)

MOUNT PLEASANT — A preschooler and two adults escaped injury this morning when a school bus caught fire and was engulfed by flames.

The 20-seat bus was headed up hill on steep Road Hill Road off Pleasantville Road about 8:20 a.m. when a fire broke out in the engine, Pleasantville Fire Chief Michael Ferguson said.

Soon, the flames spread to the rest of the bus, burning the seats down to their metal frames and rising 15 feet into the air to burn tree leaves above as well as brush alongside the bus. The wet vegetation prevented the brush fire from spreading.

The preschooler, bus driver and an aide got off before the fire spread and were not injured.

The bus is owned by Astra Transportation Corp. of Yonkers. It was on its way to pick up two other children for transportation to a private school in Yonkers, said Anthony Multari, the bus company's manager.

About 30 firefighters from the Briarcliff and Pleasantville fought the fire, which was under control in 10 minutes, Ferguson said.
