  8. Family asks public to help solve Greenburgh homicide

By JONATHAN BANDLER AND REBECCA BAKER

    THE JOURNAL NEWS

    (Original publication: August 12, 2007)

GREENBURGH -- The family of the man gunned down early this morning on Manhattan Avenue is asking that anyone with information call police.

Kenyatta Parks, 31, was shot dead about 1:30 a.m. outside No. 116.

Whamon Pedrow said his stepson had begun to turn his life around when it was cut short. He is pretty sure someone in the neighborhood has information and is urging that person to speak up.

"If you see a guy walking around with a gun, put a quarter in the phone," he said. "Do it anonymously."

Greenburgh police can be reached at 914-682-5331.

Parks was killed just down the street from his parents' apartment at 100 Manhattan Ave., where he had stopped Saturday night.

Police have made no arrests. Officers scoured the neighborhood trying to find potential witnesses, but were were tight-lipped about the progress of the investigation.

"We are methodically going through the evidence," police Capt. Joseph DeCarlo said.

Whamon Pedrow and his wife, Sylvia, were sleeping when the sound of gunfire came through their bedroom window.

"All of a sudden we heard, 'Pop. Pop.' We thought no more of it."

"Then my phone rang and it was the lady up the street. She said, 'Kenyatta is dead, Come downstairs.' "

Parks was pronounced dead at the scene and his body remained there for more than six hours as Greenburgh detectives canvassed the block between Beech and Maple streets searching for shell casings, a weapon and other evidence. The medical examiner removed the body at 8:05 a.m.

  16. None hurt in Elmsford blaze

    By JORGE FITZ-GIBBON

    THE JOURNAL NEWS

    (Original publication: June 24, 2007)

ELMSFORD - An afternoon basement fire forced a village man from his home and summoned firefighters from three Westchester fire departments.

Elmsford Fire Chief Michael Eannazzo said one of his firefighters suffered from exhaustion, but that no one was seriously injured in the 12:50 p.m. blaze.

Village resident Phillip Chapman said he was home alone in the two-story house he shares with his brother and mother when he saw the flames.

"I looked down in the basement and I saw flames, so I called 911," Chapman said. "When I went back to go in it was too smoky."

Chapman said his cat, Butterscotch, was unaccounted for. Fire officials had not determined the extent of the damage, but no serious damage was visible from the home's exterior.

Eannazzo said Elmsford firefighters, with help from Irvington and Valhalla, extinguished the blaze within 15 minutes.

He said Hartsdale and Hawthorne units were on standby to cover Elmsford firehouses.

"At this time we don't know what the cause of it is," Eannazzo said at the scene at 56 White Plains Ave. "We're still in the operation, just checking for hot spots."

Eannazzo said the danger with basement fires is that flames can spread upward, something firefighters were able to prevent today by dousing the flames quickly.

"It does have the potential of extending to the upper floors," he said. "The guys made a great stop. They got in there and got it out."
