  1. Where on North Ave and Church St. ??

The old Engine 6 is located on North Ave. just south of Wilmot Rd., where North Ave. turns to Mill Rd. It is now a private residence.

The Church St. firehouse is about 2-3 buildings in from Main St. opposite the parking garage. It is now used as a French Baptist church.

  2. Obviously you haven't been to a parade because if you have youd see that youre in the minority. I didnt join to go to parades but its a big part of my departments activities and therefore I support it. Going to parades I get to know other people from other departments and that helps when fighting fires.  Thats why its in the rules of my department. Im not saying you shouldnt train but there are other things besides training. Nobody in my department wants to go to the firehouse and all we do is train and stuff there needs to some fun stuff to do as well and the community loves and demands parades so we will piss them off if we dont march

Why don't you hold a drill with several other departments this way you can "get to know other people" while at the same time you are training. I can honestly say that I have never been to a parade nor do I have any plans to. I have nothing against anyone who does, I just don't have any interest. As I said before if your pride comes from a trophy your in the wrong place. Oh and by the way, I think your taxpayers would rather know that you are training and providing them with the best possible level of fire protection than know that you won the best engine catagory at a parade.

  3. When you dont have a lot of calls theres plenty of time to train and to march in parades, so its not a big deal plus if you dont have a lot of fires or calls then you dont need to train as much and you need to do something to bring up moral like parades
parades are supposed to be fun and are part of being a volunteer why are there so many people trying to ruin it everyone trains enough as it is and sometimes too much is boring maybe this person needs to take a lesson from the older members who been around longer i think its good the member is being punished for trying to hurt the department

I can't belive you would think that you can have too much training. You really need to rethink why you joined the fire service. Alot of firefighters were killed or severly injured because they were in a situation that they were not properly trained to handle. Parades are great if your into it but they don't make you any better as a firefighter. Even if you don't go on alot of runs, you need to be prepared for when you do get called. Also, your morale should come from the service you provide your taxpayers, not how many trophies are in your display case.

  5. Greenville FD ran aproximately 60 calls ranging from trees that fell on houses to wires down to automatic alarms between 11pm last night and 10pm tonight. Luckily, the only a few people sustained minor injuries. Also, as a side note the Greenburgh Tech. Rescue team worked to clear trees and debris off roads throughout the town. It was pretty amazing to see the damage and flooding along Central Ave in Greenville and Hartsdale.

  6. Whoever rides on the rig doesn't have to it is their choice we can do what we want. It is not as unsafe as you "experts" think it is. We deserved that trophy

    screw you guys

While you may not read about firefighters dying because they fell off their truck on a daily basis, one death or injury is too many. Did you already forget about the FDNY firefighter who almost died because he fell off a moving truck a year ago?

As far as trophys go, I'd be alot more concerned with the safety of me and my fellow firefighters than whats in my departments trophy case. By the way try telling OSHA you can "do what you want" and I'm pretty sure they won't care how many trophys you won.

The old guys tell me they did it when they were kids, and nobody has ever fallen off in that long time so that proves its not dangerous accidents happen and they will on top of the rig or inside They taught me and there around long enough to polish their trophies

While its true accidents can and will happen, they can also be prevented. Hopefully the rest of your department does not share that same attitude that you do.

  7. Without trying to ssound like I'm starting a career vs volunteer debate, I have to ask at what point do you admit that you need to hire career firefighters. I think that building affordable housing for volunteer's won't solve any problems.

First of all, lets face it the number of volunteers is rapidlly decreasing not just in this area but throughout the country. Many towns and villages in Rockland and Westchester have become bedroom communities where many residents do not work where they live. Try convincing someone who commutes five or six days a week to NYC to give up some of their spare time to volunteer either for a fire department or volunteer ambulance corps.

Secondly, is there a program set up to monitor who would be offered the affordable housing? Will it be available to everyone or only those who make a certain number of calls and drills. What will be done to ensure that you don't get people joining just for the affordable housing? How will you ensure that once someone moves into the affordable housing that they will stay active 5 or 10 years down the road?

Finally, I wonder how many paid firefighters could be hired for the amount that is going to be spent on this project. I realize that hiring career firefighters may not be the best solution in every case due to financial issues among other things but I think it is something that should be strongly considered. I think that many departments, for what ever reason, refuse to admit that they have major issues when it comes to manpower. In my opinion, if you have to be retoned for a call even once you have a problem. Ultimately, you have to ask yourselves if you are truely providing the best possible service to your residents.

Again I don't mean to offend anyone, I just wanted to give my opinion.

  12. http://www.ci.richmond.va.us/departments/f...ions/quint.aspx

This is the website for the Richmond, VA Fire Department. It explains how they swithced to only running quints and how it allows them to have more manpower on calls and also increase their response capabilities. I don't know how well it actually works but its interesting to see the change in numbers for them by running all quints.

  14. i know greenville runs their quint first due, i'm sure someone here will elaborate on the perticulars. it seems to work well for them. it's a 75 foot single axle truck with a 1500gpm i belive. and a 300 gal tank.

L4 is a 2001 75' Pierce quint w/ a 400 gallon tank. 9 times out of 10 L4 will take the front of the buildingwith E150 taking the hydrant. GFD has run a quint a L4 since the early 1990's when TL4 was replaced.
