  1. Chris, that is basically were I was going. Something is wrong when even how to dispatch a job can become my sandbox, my toys, my rules. My way of thinking is that more information is always better, re-tone and let a department know that they have a working fire. If a retone brings out 5 or 6 members that may have blew off the first page then that is 5 or 6 more hands on the scene. Lets face it manpower is a big issue everywhere and volunteers are human, they may not jump up from the dinner table or leave work on the initial call because it sounded like a "nothing" job but they may drop everything and run for a "confirmed" job. I have seen the posts here questioning the re-tones for manpower but lets face if it gets the message out it was well worth it. Does not mean there is not a decent first response but back up personnel is always an advantage. In a perfect world everyone would drop everything and run for every job, but its far from a perfect world. Just my 2 cents.
  2. Your dating yourself. Station 23 was Jacobi (Bronx Municipal) pre-FDNY, 22 was on Boston Rd at 169, 21 was at Lincoln Hospital and 24 was OLM. Not to forget the 50Pct Outpost, Hunts Point Outpost and Ogden Ave Outposts.
  3. Chief, one question that maybe you can answer. Is there a reason why 60 Control does not do an automatic "re-tone" on a confirmed structure fire (10-75). If for nothing else but to wake up member who possibly are at work and not ready to up and leave for an unfounded job especially with the "automatic alarm" calls. I realize a lot of these practices are left to individual depts to do similar to automatic additional alarm assignments. I know FDNY even does a tone and announces a working fire on the borough and citywide channel. IMO it is a good practice as a notifier and wake up call.
  4. Great find. A search of the internet found this item available at Lowes for $60. Home Depot has another brand for the same price. Small price for peace of mind!!
  5. Since many homes are equipped with cordless phones and many elderly use the secondary bells and light flashers one would wonder if even asking dispatch to try the call back number could be enough to set off an explosive event.
  6. As many people have suggested to you here, be ready to own up to your actions as "your actions". Justifying them will only appear to shift blame. As far as your statement "I guess you must be one of the people that sees things in only black and white" understand one thing with city agencies like FDNY everything is black and white. If you let a statement like that slip out in an interview you will most likely be looking for work with a transport service. Good luck with your interviews - be honest and accept blame but that does not mean you have to bend over either. Best of luck.
  7. Interesting- YANKEE Pin Strips with a Mets logo.
  8. NBC and ABC are reporting that a man tried to ignite a small explosive on a flight from Washington D.C. to Denver. ABC is reporting the man is Mohammed al Modadi a diplomat from the Qatar embassy in Washington. According to ABC: The suspect was identified by authorities as a diplomat in the Qatar embassy in Washington, Mohammed al Modadi. The FBI said the man had full diplomat immunity as the 3rd secretary and vice-consul CNN is now reporting that the explosive was a "shoe bomb."
  9. My prayers go out to the family of these young men as well as the first responders who responded to this tragic call.
  10. As an officer who worker the aftermath of the fire I can personally say that witnessing the effects on family and friends left behind was something etched in my mind forever. Working the morgue sector and subsequent identification unit set up in the public school across the street was something that became surreal. To see mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers looking at pictures of the deceased and then stopping at one and collapsing in total devastation was heart wrenching. Then followed the mass funeral details where groups of 8 -10 - 12 would be waked together. The crowds that streamed in were massive. Funerals/wake details had a supervisor, 2 BLS units, an ALS unit, a MERV, an SOD unit and staffing. May they rest in peace and may Julio Gonzalez rot in jail. The true crime - he is parole eligible in March 2015!!
  11. Yes my post was written for a perfect world which is the direction every discussion leads. If you do not aim toward a "perfect world" then you may as well hang up your boots now. Also I do not believe anything in my post led to your line "big bad FDNY". Is every dept perfect - no. Does FDNY have a functional mentor program - yes and no. Most of the medics that like to precept ride alongs are "mentor" quality. Is BLS a revolving door - of course. In any department fresh young meat is cheaper than someone who is going to hang around, get longevity raises and vest a pension. All agencies sacrifice experience for the almighty dollar.
  12. That works for areas where the homes are spread out but in congested areas where they are attached structures having GPS accurate to only 100-500 feet can put you 2 to 5 houses away from your destination. You may be in the ballpark but at the wrong base.
  13. A new EMT should be placed with members that are designated as FTOs not just anyone. These members should be able to not only evaluate the new EMT's readiness to perform solo but be able to orient them to equipment locations, paperwork, routines, protocols, how to avoid bad habits, pitfalls of short cuts, etc. The FTO should be a mentor not a babysitter being there to make sure that the rookie is comfortable to be solo along with being able to perform solo. While a new EMT may have the skill set need to do the job he/she may be apprehensive about making those calls solo. A good FTO will foster that sense of confidence in them so that they can perform freely without second guessing their own actions. To put a time frame of 5, 10 or 15 calls on this experience is a disservice to both the organization, the patient and the EMT. When the FTO feels the EMT is ready then it is time. Also it is important to have an FTO that "remembers when" they were a rookie and how it felt to be evaluated, judged and looked at as unequal because they were "not as experienced". This mentoring attitude can go a long way to build that confidence level up quickly.
  14. Just wait for the other shoe to drop. They will soon need to create another government agency and fund it to track those with and without insurance, administer the "fines" and programs the bill created.
  15. I agree 100% with you. I had always found that when you got the family involved even if it was carrying equipment with you to the bus it made them feel useful, took some of the stress out of the situation, put the crew in a positive light with the family and got them out of your hair while you did your job. I always prescribed to the thinking " a busy family member is a family member that does not get in the way." Lets face it that is why they used to have expecting fathers go boil water during home deliveries, it kept them busy, made them feel useful and got them out of the way. Lets face it scandal sells papers.
  16. Maybe the should investigate the reporter. It appears he had a first grader write his story for him.

  18. The fact that YFD was able to hold this fire to the original fire building with no extension to the exposures and no injuries to members or civilians is amazing. Reports were people trapped and from what I have heard a few heroic rescues of residents occurred. KUDOS to YFD for a job well done!!
  19. I apologize if my response seemed a dig at Moose. I realize the line was sarcastic. The purpose was to raise a point. All to often members, EMS, FD and PD, approach incidents with the lets put on a good show cowboy attitude and it carelessly exposes them along with other members to injury or worse.
  20. Only one question. Is the risk of a line of duty injury or worse death worth putting on that show? Will they put on that piece of granite "He put on a good show"?
  21. Talk about a typical politician. "The Board of Legislators on Tuesday approved 13 percent pay raises for senior county executive's aides Laurence Gottlieb, director of economic development, and Ned McCormack, communications director. On the job for two months, they will see their salaries increase from $137,230 to $155,245, up $18,015." from LoHud article: http://www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=20103040342. Lets cut the working guy, essential services and anything else that will hurt but don't touch the "executive pay raises". This is the guy that ran on the reform the county legislature platform and cut spending and two months in he is no different than the rest. Raises for those that are close and pink slips for the rest. Fasten your seat belts its going to be a bumpy ride.

  23. Metro North stops by the River. I am not sure about the Bee Line Bus schedule into town. The Parade is Saturday, March 13th at 3pm Route runs as follows: Crompond Rd near Ester St to South Division St, left on First St, right on Union Ave, right on Central Ave, left on N Division St, right on Main St then right on James St past the reviewing stand on James St between Park St. and Brown St. Parade ends at Brown St. Better bring an umbrella - forecast is for heavy rain and windy.
  24. Chief I believe this is the photo(s)you were looking for. Castle is the right description.
  25. Federal law, under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, (FLSA) defines individuals that provide services without any expectation of compensation, and without any coercion or intimidation, as “volunteers” (non-employees). The are many exceptions to this definition. For instance, if a volunteer receives a small payment, compensation or something of value in exchange for volunteering, the worker automatically an employee even if she or he didn’t “expect” to be paid. In NYS Volunteer Firefighters are compensated in many district with a pension, tax credit, etc. This "compensation for service" in essence make the volunteer an "unpaid employee" of the Fire District.
