  2. It seems that the article has holes in it as the story does not seem to flow. While no one should die unnecessarily, it appears that he continued his lecture series, consulted with his son and must have signed an RMA. Aside from the medic and his partner the only other witness with first hand knowledge won't be providing a deposition. One would wonder how he presented these symptoms, was he determined to take that flight and not go to the ER, did he call EMS or was it the friend he canceled dinner with, what was the son's advise when he spoke to him - go to the ER or suck it up. I would love to hear the full story and will reserve my opinions till I hear more.
  3. Yeah its called an extra hamster on Red Bull. LOL
  4. It gets better every time you read the paper. This is stuff movies are made of. A Kennedy drives impaired (seizure, drugs, alcohol, whatever the excuse this week), strikes truck, endangers countless innocent citizens on highway in the process, found slumped over wheel on exit ramp with flat tire, admits to trooper she took a "sleeping pill",, claims it was a seizure from an old brain injury, keeps license anyway, released with no bail and the person "she" hit and ran from is charged with leaving the scene. Only in Camelot!!
  5. Correct me if I am wrong but by claiming seizure activity caused an accident, does that not cause DMV to suspend a license for medical reasons for uncontrolled seizures since this is new onset with no know cause.
  6. This story has many different aspects to it. First, no crew should be going balls to the wall to the ER with CPR going on in the back, PD escort or not. For that matter, no transport should be going that fast and bouncing the crew and patient around that they need to hold on to prevent falling. Next, a protocol such as this puts the crew at risk at the scene to an explosive situation when family members see them stop working and start packing up. Lets face it, in their eyes they are a glorified taxi not the doctors. Now you are adding another decision to the transport criteria: Is it safe for me to stop and call it or should I transport and put on a show for my safety? It would be interesting to see how many and how long you can stop while packaging and transporting without creating a significantly negative effect on the patient outcome. Everyone wants to know that everything was done for granny but unfortunately I do not see the picture of a crew packing up after 20 minutes and leaving granny on the kitchen floor reinforcing that feeling. Just my opinion.
  7. Wait till someone is coming home at 2am with a dead cellphone and needs to produce a ticket. Or your phone breaks or malfunctions or is lost and you have to wait for that replacement in the mail that will come in 2 days. There goes your monthly ticket stuck in cyberspace. Can't wait to see the fix for this.
  8. ny10570, I can understand and appreciate your train of thought but it is just that train of thinking that would create a scenario that someone will profit from. Sometimes you have to think outside the box to see the possibilities of what something is capable of. Agreed the everyday car thief is not out there to get the Yellow Dot card and your address is on your reg and insurance card but lets face it people have been robbed while out to dinner while the valet use their own keys to enter their homes, nobody ever expected the internet to be used for cybercrime but it has and the list goes on. So to say the info is benign and the lets assume the state sheriffs are not idiots is a reaching statement. No one is saying they are idiots, just sometimes when developing what seems like a good idea we get tunnel vision and do not see the other possible areas that could pose a problem or a risk. Like I said in the start of my original post, I do not know and would love to see what information these cards contain beyond what is found on your normal driver ID. If these cards save even one life they are worth it but if they create a criminal avenue then that risk needs to be weighed carefully. Maybe a bar coded or encoded card is needed which they may very well be.
  9. I hate to be the wet blanket at the party but while I am sure this is a good idea it is also an invitation to crime. Based on the information stored on the card in the glove box, and I would love to know how much info is placed there, this simple yellow dot could be a billboard for would be criminals to create identity theft from the card info or falsely notify family members of a persons fictitious mishap to gain secure personal information for the same following a simple vehicle break in and accessing the card.
  10. The other issue is you rarely see triage (aside from drills) done properly e.g assess, tag and move on. You see many units arrive at incidents that are technically MCIs and getting tunnel vision. Stopping at the first patient and treating, working up the traumatic arrest on the MVA with 5 plus patients and only one unit on scene, etc. Tags are great but they need to be used with the philosophy behind their use: assess, identify, classify, prioritize then treat.Stopping mid stream at the first black tag to start CPR defeats the triage system unless you have multiple units on scene and the red and yellow tags will not suffer for it.
  11. x4093k are you sure you even hit the NYC 911 call center. Lets face it, with cellphones it is a crap shoot as to what jurisdiction gets your call. Hudson River corridor calls can end up routed to the NY or NJ side. I have made many a call on Route 9 only to get Rockland County 911.
  12. From what I have been told the union was willing to continue to talk and postpone the strike deadline by two weeks. Con Ed decided to play hard ball or in better terms union bust and go for a lockout. They claim in an interview earlier today it was in their customers best interest. How in the middle of heat wave number 2 with number 3 expected in the end of the week does locking out 8500 employees and replacing them with 5000 managers, many of which have not done more than changed a light bulb recently, equate to "in the best interest of their customers". We all know Con Ed customers pay one of the highest rates in the nation while the utility consistently runs in the black with 8+ digit profits and a CEO that earns a 8 figure salary (last report was $10,965,047 in total compensation, source: Bloomberg Businessweek)
  13. I guess gone are the days when dispatch would call the bridge and have them pull a lane. You would get told "Lane 9 Red Flashing Lane Light clear to go". Sounds like you need to play an audio track to Convoy next time you blast the tolls.
  14. The search actually lasted about 5 hours until the official search was called off. The Coast Guard continued to patrol the area for a while longer.
  15. Sound awful calm for someone post explosion with "3 confirmed dead and standing in 3 feet of water calling for help." Sounds scripted. At the end it seems like he said he was dealing with 2nd and 3rd degree burns. No indication of pain in his voice assuming he was the "burn patient". He also asks for 5 minutes to shout out to the people on the rafts while on a sinking vessel. They need to find this fool and prosecute him so no one else gets the bright idea to copy him.
  16. Interesting news this morning. Exact same story occurred in the Bahamas with a boat of 28 Haitian immigrants. This time it was founded: 11 dead, 13 missing, 4 made it to shore on their own. The CNN news story link: http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2012/06/12/11-dead-others-missing-after-incident-with-haitian-migrants-boat/
  17. NJMedic you probably have these answers. Is the NJ EMS Task force MERV staffed by volunteer or paid services? Where does it come out of? I agree, one needs to be suspicious that this was a response test by would be terrorists to see how fast and what type of response can be assembled. Summertime is coming up and Sandy Hook is right near all the beach resort areas on the New Jersey shore.
  18. While I understand the general reasoning of this thread it really seems to be alot of time being spent on a non-issue. As public servants (paid or volunteer) we spend enough time dealing with the public preception of what we should or should not be doing. e.g. why is that unit sitting on the corner having a soda and a sandwich and not working or why was that engine company just in Stop and Shop picking up groceries. Now along with the general public we have our own questioning why was the screen on that page. The chief was not in the car on the computer neglecting his job to "facebook" so what is the issue. Maybe it was a facebook screen shot screen saver. Is the news that slow that we can't find some real topics.
  19. Even more reassuring is that the trooper acted on it.
  20. If the lift assist is truely a case of a "I fallen and I can't get up" EMS should definitely respond to evaluate the patient for possible injuries from a fall and if a medical condition exists that precipitated the fall along with PD or FD depending on the area of responsibility for possible forced entry. When the lft assist becomes a "regular" then contact should be made with a family member or a DSS referral should be made to the office of aging for the persons safety. If the person has become a fall risk and clearly needs 24 hour care as a health care provider you can not ignore this situation either. While it may not be a true emergency it can escalate into one when the next fall is down a flight of stair or in a full bathtub. These lift assists are looked at as nussance calls but lets face facts they are really cries for help from patients with a voice that sometimes we either don't understand or don't take the time to understand. Remember we can all be that "lift assist" some day.
  21. I have watched this video numerous times both straight through and stopping it and I think we are to quick to toss blame at the Philly Fire Medic driver. I would love to know if anyone knows the actual AI results on this accident. If you watch the video you will note a few key points. The vehicle ahead of the ambulance is making an unobstructed right turn without stopping, the vehicle trailing the ambulance approaches the intersection without reducing speeding and actually proceeds into the interscetion also. These two factors would lead one to believe that while the traffic signal facing the camera was red the signal in their direction may have been green leaving the car that the struck the ambulance in the right rear quarter to have been the vehicle that ran the red traffic control signal. The traffic signal facing the camera that turns green at the 00:06 mark may have actually been a delayed green and not a syncronized green. .Just my observations and conclusions not facts.
  22. Looks like a great drill and one that needed to be planned and played out due to the possibility of happening at West Co Airport. Just one question that jumps out at me looking at the journal news photos. How did the woman end up in the motorized wheelchair on the runway? Do they allow these chairs on planes in the passenger compartment? Been a while since I have flown anywhere.
  23. While I will agree that driver error is a major factor that section of road is dangers. After working that area for years I responded to numerous MVAs there. The limited sight distance when you crest southbound, lack of an adequate deceleration lane on the entire stretch of the BRP from 233 to Soundview and traffic sitting in the right travel lane due to a backed up off ramp are major factors as well. The expansion joints and potholes bounce vehicles around regardless of speed sending them out of their respective travel lanes. Such a factor could easily send a driver left and make contact with the wall. Inexperience and tire damage could easily cause a driver to over correct and loose control. While an AI is still underway and it would be inappropriate to suggest cause or blame in this forum one thing is clear, road conditions not only on the BRP but in the entire tri-state area are poor and contribute if not cause many of the accidents we see daily.
  24. My condolences to YPD and especially PO Swart on the loss of both a partner and a loyal friend.
  25. What is interesting is the BRP is only the tip of the iceburg. Look at the Croton Resevior Bridge on the Taconic. Like I said in a previous post, take a three lane bridge, 4 foot of jersey barrier down the middle and increase it to four lanes, no shoulder with a low outter barrier and you have a recipe for disaster. The state will say "but the speed is posted as 35 mph due the construction zone" but fact are facts. The Taconic is 55 mph and looks like the Indy 500 at times. And that does not account for the increased weight load and stress of 4 lanes and the weight of the jersey barrier over time. Take that same scenario to the Bronx-Manhattan boarder and look at the upper deck of the Henry Hudson Bridge where the outter barrier is being reduced from the old 4 foot barrier to the newly installed 2'8" barrier, again a recipe for disaster. This is just 2 of the countless scenarios throughout the region where for some reason engineers have decided a lower barrier is good enough even as more and more high profile SUVs are on the road. Just my 2 cents.
