  1. Check you Blackberry Internet Service email settings, best done on a PC through the web site (http://nextel.blackberry.com/). You will need your user name and password to log in. Once you are logged in you will have access to the email addresses you have set up on your phone you can set up to have all email go to your phone or just certain emails based on criteria e.g. email address, subject, etc. and the rest not forwarded. You can also check and see if it is set where if you delete from the BB it deletes from the server also make sure it leaves a copy on the server for a set time after receiving e.g. 2 days or indefinitely to give you time to log on with a PC. Good luck.

  2. A White Plains police officer has died in the line of duty.

Authorities said he collapsed after chasing and arresting a suspect on Saturday afternoon. Michael Perry, 43, was a 7 year veteran of the White Plains Police Department. He was taken to White Plains Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:30 p.m. with his family by his side. The cause of death has not been determined. Perry is survived by his wife and two children.

Officer Perry responded to a a larceny suspect at the entrance to Macy's Court Square and chased the suspect on foot, apprehended him at Court and Main and brought him back to police headquarters. Perry collapsed after arriving a police headquarters. The suspect was identified as Rickey Pryor, 53. Investigators said Pryor is a career criminal with more than 300 arrests. He has been charged with resisting arrest and larceny in this case.

  3. Dispatched to a unconscious person in the middle of the woods with an hour extrication time or you are 2 hours away from the nearest hospital is 2 hours away and closest medic is an hour.

JetPhoto, I agree with all of your thinking except the one noted. I have had my share of pre-hospital saves with just CPR and no ALS intervention. If you made it to the patient, unless the patient shows obvious signs of death or it is a multiple patient triage situation as a medical provider you owe it to the patient to attempt to resuscitate as long as they do not have obvious injuries that would dictate differently. Extrication time or travel time should not be a factor if you made patient contact. Just my 2 cents.

  4. I agree with "585" if the purpose of the post was to open a forum to discuss the reasons or protocol for field-termination of CPR than it should have been done in a hypothetical, non call specific manner. If it was to find out specifics to a personal question about a call then a PM would be more appropriate. To get into patient specific call information violates HIPAA laws regardless of the final disposition of the patient. First rule of thumb: never discuss patient or call specific information in public or with parties not related to the call. To do so both looks unprofessional and leaves you liable for personal litigation.

  5. I'm sorry, but I am a firm believer in shared costs, meaning that everyone should pay at least something toward health insurance. If it costs me an extra $50 a check to subsidize my health insurance, and in the long run, I can alleviate some of the strain on my department and the taxpayers who support it, thereby potentially saving a job or jobs, then I am all for it. The private sector does it, and in this day and age, maybe the public sector should, too. We may have to foot some upfront costs, but in the long run, it might just be a better situation in the end.

I have to strongly disagree with you. When employees retiree they are specified a base pension that only increases with COLA yearly. While that $50 a check is not bad to you ask someone on a "fixed income" what difference $50 or $100 a check makes. Why should the public sector pay for the private sectors failures. Remember it is the private sector that got the tax breaks and incentives that created a lot of the problems. The taxpayers are straining and the department strains are due to government balancing the budgets on the workforce's back. Instead of illegally changing existing pension plans of retirees, illegally take away the sweetheart deals the developers were given, oh wait they have deeper pockets for lawyers than the retirees so use the media and make the public employee the bad guy. Just look at the media and see what has been going on to set this up - relentless articles about overtime earned, articles detailing benefits all to make the public see the public sector employee as the bad guy not the politicians that gave away the store to every developer that wanted to put up something bigger than a dog house.

  6. While equipping and training police officers with a FIT5 and various other equipment would without a doubt help to save lives especially since they are out cruising the streets and neighborhoods while most residents are asleep. Unfortunately, the unions would become their members own worst enemies in the efforts to secure this training and equipment. I could hear the talks now: city manager and police chief of town X announce the plan for an initiative to train and equip every PO and cruiser in town X. The union replies that they want additional differential pay for the added duties, responsibility and risk to their members and the fact that they are being asked to work out of title. Town X announces they are scrapping the plan due to unexpected additional costs and legal roadblocks created by the union.

  7. FYI By law, bargaining units (the unions) are not allowed to negotiate for persons who have retired,

Except for COLA, retirement packages are "written in stone"

It's like buying a house. Once you sign your mortgage, the mortgage company cannot change your contract because you now happen to be paying a lower interest than the national average. That's their problem.

Very well said!!! Problem is simple: politicians feel since they make the rules they can break or change them at will. Look at the years of borrowing from Social Security and not paying back only to now get caught short. Seems like a man named Madoff used his investors money at will also and got caught short. Funny how the rules change for the rule makers.

  9. Public employees have what is called a defined benefit plan while private sector employees have a defined contribution plan. In effect, defined contribution plans draw a pension based on the dollar amount in the account i.e. a 401K and rarely include benefits. Public employees who pay into their pension plans, which is simply a way to appease the taxpayer into feeling they are not footing the bill, have a defined benefit plan which in effect states that they will get a set amount for life and set benefits for life. Most public employees rarely pay more than 30% of the actual contribution amount needed to fund the plan. This plan, refer to by many outside the public sector as the government employee golden parachute, was a trade off for the low wages, long hours and sub-standard conditions public employees dealt with. It was a suffer now to benefit late proposal many took when they signed on. While White Plains may have had a knee jerk reaction to "change" the existing benefits one only needs to look at the rest of the country to see states and cities scrambling to produce legislation that will only effect "new hires" since they recognize that when members joined the pension plans they entered a contract and while contracts can be broken through the courts, think about the ramifications. What judge in his right mind is going to set the precedent that can be used to change his own pension plan. Many states starting with NJ have recognized that the only option is to change things going forward and they are "stuck" with the plans that are in existence especially for current retirees.

  12. Definitely will make the next fool think twice knowing that he may get tased instead of just tackled after making the security look foolish as they chase him around the field. We have all seen those comical chases on the evening news sports highlights and lets face it the security staff does not come off looking too professional. On a different note in 2002 two fans ran on the field in Chicago and beat up first base coach Tom Gamboa. While being subdued a knife fell out of one fans pocket.

  13. Many quotes here have stated "medic dependent" but one thing overlooked is that the medic is the senior qualified medical control on the scene. It is the medic's call if the job goes ALS or BLS. There are a lot of other variables in play in this decision aside from a GSW to the foot such as patient status, overall health pre-GSW of the patient and the presenting trauma score to name a few that may or may not have the medic call the job BLS and relinquish the patient and control.

  15. Con Edison electric and gas, as well as Verizon and AT&T were called due the the car's proximity to underwater utilities in the area.

Chief, very interesting, I don't think many people would have thought about the underwater utility involvement, I was even aware that they existed in that area. I wonder how many other "hidden" utilities there are in the county that are overlooked all the time. I know many people did not realize that the Main Street bridge in Peekskill that was the target of many a box truck turned convertible had a gas main running through it.

  16. If you have such a problem with the justice system using the death penalty then there are always other places to live, I hear france is nice this time of year !

And thanks to all those "immoral" people they are not speaking German either. In many cases the death penalty is warranted. Let's face it how many Life Sentences can a person serve.
