That is one of the worst fires I have seen I can't believe no one got killed in that fire. NYC fire dept did a fantastic job fighting that fire. It is sad to see a landmark be destroyed by a fire that was purposely set.

Nice job as always by FDNY! They really are a rolemodel for other big, urban departments. From what I understand there were a lot of exposure threats (i.e. neighboring warehouses) that were protected.

Warehouse Fire Continues Burning in Brooklyn

By MICHAEL WILSON

The New York Times 11:18 AM ET

A fire that roared through a network of abandoned, historic warehouses on the Brooklyn waterfront on Tuesday continued burning today, with nearly 100 firefighters remaining on the scene to pump water on the smoking and smoldering remnants.

The fire, which broke out Tuesday morning, spread with a speed and ferocity that challenged and exhausted hundreds of firefighters, and led fire marshals to suspect arson.

The blaze contributed to the collapse of some of the brick walls of the buildings, leading to fears that important evidence on its origin may have been lost in the inferno.

Demolition crews arrived today to take down the unstable walls, even as fire continued in the lower levels of the buildings.

A Fire Department spokesman said no further public statements were planned for today. He said the continuing blaze was being treated as a two-alarm fire

Went out there last night as a relief unit. Took a walk inside the Exp 4 building which didn't burn, don't know how it didn't. It was of the same style construction, heavy wood timber with pretty much only the outside walls brick and metal stair cases. Everything else was wood, Walls, floors, you name it, it was wood.

Looked like a bomb went off. There was burning debris all around the parking lot, not much of the building left standing. However one of those budget trucks did survive the fire.

I was able to get some snapshots I will have to try to upload them tomorrow.

i actually work at the brooklyn navy yard abbout 200 yards from the fire scene. It was still smoking last night when i left work at 8pm. I have some awesome shots from my boat i will load them later or first thing tommorow. You could actually smell the smoke throught the harbor when the wwind changed. Very erie and reminisent of 9/11.

Reminds me of Cohoes NY Urban Renewal program :D . Similar picture, but probably only about a quarter of the size, if that.
