Injured firefighter in critical condition

By Rocky Mountain News

May 9, 2006

A Denver firefighter who was injured in a house fire this morning is in critical condition, officials said this afternoon.

The firefighter, who hasn’t been identified, was found lying on his stomach and unconscious in the basement of the home at 501 S. High St., said Lt. Phil Champagne, a fire spokesman.

The fire, which has been extinguished, was reported just after 11 a.m. The cause is still under investigation.

"We’ve not sure yet what caused it," Champagne said. "This is a one-story, single-family structure, and he was inside making the initial attack when something happened.

"This is just a dangerous profession."

Streets around the fire scene are still sealed off.

Firefighter Injured

Firefighter hospitalized after apparent air mask mishap

KKTV11 - Colorado Springs

A firefighter remains in critical condition after authorities say he collapsed inside a burning house in an apparent mishap with his oxygen mask yesterday.

Denver fire spokesman Phil Champaign says 35-year-old Billy Green was revived by fellow firefighters who performed CPR on him.

Denver Fire Chief Larry Trujillo tells The Denver Post the apparatus that regulates oxygen flow into the mask may have been improperly attached on Green.

It may have caused him to pass out in thick smoke inside the house.

Trujillo says Green was unconscious in a hospital several hours after the mishap.

But he's showing encouraging signs that included strong brain activity.

Green, a ten-year firefighting veteran, has a wife and a child.

Can anyone tell me why this Denver Chief feels inclined to make a comment to the press about a firefighters injury when it is clear that a full investigation has not been conducted yet?

The article seems to imply that the firefighters mask was improperly donned. Even if this turns out to be true, I feel that this Chief should hold his comments until the facts are fully determined.

What does anyone else think?

You are right in saying that, but the article does not just imply that his mask was improperly donned, it also implies that the SCBA may have malfunctioned, but once again you are right and the investigation will determine the truth.

Denver Firefighter Is Improving

(CBS4) DENVER

A firefighter who collapsed inside a burning house improved overnight and has regained consciousness, authorities said Wednesday.

Billy Green, 35, was alert and chatting with his family at Denver Health hospital one day after the incident, fire department spokesman Phil Champagne said.

Champagne said investigators were still trying to determine why Green lost consciousness. He said possible causes included a malfunction in Green's oxygen apparatus, exertion or adrenaline, but nothing had been ruled out.

Other firefighters pulled Green from the house.

He had been listed in critical condition when he was hospitalized. Denver Health officials did not immediately return calls Wednesday, but Champagne said Green was expected to be upgraded to fair condition.

He said firefighters were "ecstatic" over Green's recovery.

"The outcome could have been devastating," he said.
