Apartment fire kills one person in Waterbury

waterbury, Conn. (AP) - One woman was killed and nine others injured in an apartment fire early Sunday that forced more than 100 people from their homes, police said.

The fire was reported around 2:30 a.m. in a building at the Bradley Gardens apartment complex on Bradley Avenue. The building was badly damaged and firefighters were still battling the blaze at 8 a.m.

More than 100 people were evacuated to a temporary shelter at a nearby elementary school, police Lt. Chris Corbett said. Nine people were taken to local hospitals with minor burns and smoke inhalation. None of those injuries were believed to be serious.

Officials have not yet said what caused the fire. The name of the woman killed has not been released because her family has not been notified.

The fire was the third deadly blaze in the state over the weekend. One person died Saturday in a house fire in Westbrook and another died in a motel fire in Meriden.
