Special Units

4 posts in this topic

Just wondering about the jobs of a few units in the city:

FDNY Tactical Support Units

NYPD ESU MALTs

FDNY Major Emergency Response Vehicles (MERVs)

Any information would be appreciated.

FDNY Tactical Support Units replaced the old searchlight units. So this one part of it's job as well as many others. It carry’s many tools that are not on the Rescues and Squads, such as small boat, all sorts of Air tools. One thing they use a lot is the transient to watch if a wall is starting to lean.

MERV’s are a mobile treatment area. It’s an official Ambulance and is stocked like on, only that it can treat a lot of people. It’s not used for Red tag patients, but for the Green’s and things like that. During extreme weather it is used as part of rehab to keep FF’s out of the heat or cold when they are being checked out..

MALT= A ESU truck that is bascialy dedicated to lighting. Spelled out, its Mobile Auxillary Light Truck. Basicially, it carries generators and ligting rigs to create portbale quick scene lighting.

MERV= Exactly what the title sounds like. For major incidents, ( I don't know the specific call types) this vehicle is basically a rolling treatment center. It has the capability to treat several patients at once and looks like a large bus. (in fact several of the older models were school buses) A perfect example is the 3 Alarm fire in the Bronx last Wednesday; the MERV was dispatched and used to treat patients and probably MOSs at the scene. I believe FDNY EMS also maintains a similarly sized vehicle dedicated to respitory/ashtsma emergencies. If memory serves, the BX MERV is based out of Batt. 20 (Jacobi Hospital) and Manhattan's out of Bellvue.

FDNY TSU: "The many large storage compartments of the Tactical Support Unit truck hold specialized tools and equipment not usually carried by other firefighters, such as: special chainsaws for underwater use, powerful electric generators, portable pontoon boats, a telescoping light tower, and night-vision goggles." from the FDNY Firezone website

3 MERV's. 1 is in Manhattan, 3 in Brooklyn, and 4 in Queens. One and 4 are buses and 3 is on a truck chassis. The Bronx has the MRTU (mobile respiratory treatment unit). The Mervs handle any combination of up to 15 seated pts or 4 immobilized. The MRTU can treat up to 30 pts. It can also be special called for rehab during extreme weather. I believe the MERV's and MRTU are sent within their borough on any 3rd alarm or greater.
