The Menands Fire Department has lost one of its veteran firefighters.

Edgar Hamlin Scott, 76, was the captain of the Menands Fire Police Unit. The 36-year veteran died Tuesday while responding to an accident on I-787.

The crew was called to the scene of a motorcycle and car accident in the northbound lane around 4:30 p.m. They parked their vehicle in the southbound lane, and it was hit by a propane tanker.

Scott was pronounced dead at the scene, while two other officers were taken to Albany Memorial Hospital. There's no word yet on their conditions.

State Police are investigating.
