PUTNAM VALLEY - A man shot twice in the chest yesterday in Putnam Valley after he fought with an armed former Kent councilman and retired cop who was serving him divorce papers was stable this morning in the hospital, police said.

The victim, Douglas Greenwich, 52, an electrician, used a baton to attack former politician Dennis Illuminate, 66, who is also retired from the Kent Police Department, police said.

Illuminate, who works as a process server, fired a licensed .25-caliber pistol twice during the fight, according to police.

The victim was flown by helicopter into surgery at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.

No charges had been filed by this morning.

The 4:30 p.m. shooting marked the third time that Illuminate handed legal papers to Greenwich, according to police.

Greenwich was at his former home, 33 Lincoln Drive, to collect a dresser when Illuminate showed up after a tip from the victim's wife.
