October Flashback

3 posts in this topic

Though the county isn't particularly known for Halloween being an active, "Detroit-like" night, some memorable incidents have come in around the holiday. Halloween itself has seen fires in Eastchester (10-31-99 -2nd Alarm 174 Summerfield St. Fully involved gas station), Bedford (10-31-98- 2nd Alarm on arrival 7 Lincoln Ave) Rye (10-31-97 -Mutual Aid job on Forest Ave) and Fairview (10-31-00- 2nd Alarm, 2 Stone Ave X Old Kensico Rd.). Rockland County Firefighters fought a large brush fire in Hillburn for 5 days (10/28-11/1) in 2001.

Arguably the most remarkable incidents of the season occured in Yonkers on October 30th. In 1996, the first in a series of fires over the last 8 years at the Con Edison Tuckahoe Road Sub-Station knocked out power to a significant portion of New York City. The YFD's second foam operation in days called in Mutual Aid from a number of departments, including the FDNY. In 1997, a multiple alarm fire leveled a Lake Ave church. This job was part of a streak of major fires starting in the summer of that year and running well into 1998. That streak included major fires Dobbs Ferry, Pelham Manor, White Plains, Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown. 1998 came to a close with a General Alarm fire in New Rochelle.
