This was in the Journal this morning.

YONKERS - An 11-year-old Yonkers schoolboy was struck by a car this morning as he crossed the street to catch a school bus, Yonkers police said.

The child apparently suffered a broken left leg and was admitted to a local hospital after the 8:30 a.m. accident in front of 85 Riverdale Ave.

The motorist, who was driving a silver Honda, was being questioned by Yonkers detectives this morning.

At least one witness said that a school bus was stopped with its red lights flashing and the motorist drove around the bus and struck the child as he ran across the street.

"I heard a sound, 'Boom,' and the kid went up in the air," said Darren LeFever, 45, the witness.

The boy's shoes were still in the street an hour after the accident. The Honda had a broken windshield where the child hit it. The car was heading south when it struck the child.

LeFever said the woman was led away in handcuffs by police.

"This is a busy street and people don't respect the school buses," LeFever said.

Police had the street cordoned off at Riverdale Avenue and Prospect Street. The Yonkers police Accident Investigation Team is probing the accident.

The boy's name was not released and it was not immediately known what school he was heading to.

Police were expected to have more details later.

People are just plain stupid. They see a school bus with it's lights flashing and just don't care. This happens all too often.
