911 Phones on REC paths Taken Out of Service

The 40 emergency 911 "call box" telephones located on one hiking trail in Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers and along three recreational trailways that span the county will be out of service starting tomorrow due to a required conversion from analog to digital telephone service, County Parks Commissioner Joseph Stout announced.

Basically, as of tomorrow 2/18/08 cellular carriers are no longer required to support analog cellular service. The FCC has given plenty of notice that this deadline was coming. The alarm industry has had to deal with this by changing over radio transmiters that send signals to Central Stations from analog to digital. I have also heard that earlier versions of OnStar™ are also affected by this.
