UHF Radio

4 posts in this topic

My dept is in the process of changing from low band to UHF. Currently because of budget restrictions etc, we are phazing in with uhf portables and cross band repeaters. question, currently we use motorola 1250's for the uhf, 2 on each rig with the balance of low band being mt1000, what uhf radios other then motorola are being used in your dept ? pro/cons of changing brands etc?

our phase in :

1] license 6 uhf freqs

2] set up cross band repeaters on rigs / 2 portables per rig

3] balance of rig / chiefs w/ uhf portables [next phase]

4] vehicle radios / base stations/ pagers

thanks in advance

Our FD uses the same thing basically.

We have HT1250, EX600 UHF radios.

We have HT750 Low bands.

They all seem to work well, just remember to purchase the intrically safe models.

And keep them simple, ours are a nightmare!

Consider carrying the less expensive and far less complex HT-750's on your rigs. They're 16 channel radios with less buttons to accidentally get pressed, and don't have the display, which gets whacked and cracked during operations. They are durable as heck, and user friendly. MT-1000s are great radios especially in low band-if you still have 'em, and your radio guy will maintain them, great-but standardization is a great idea, in terms of training, familiarization, inventory and battery replacement.

we just started using the uhf freq's and phased in with the vertex standard radios, not sure which model but I'll let you know. No problems at all with them, actually everyone likes them.
