BREWSTER - Mayor James Schoenig is expecting Brewster's police chief to resign on Friday, though it doesn't appear that the village's top cop is on board with the idea.

Brewster Police Chief Alex Mancone declined to comment on the matter and referred questions to Daniel Seymour, his lawyer.

Don't know what the big deal is. They're not telling the guy he has to resign from the department, he just has to give up the civil service title of chief or take and pass a civil service exam for the position.

Now the Village is going to circumvent civil service rules and testing requirements and call it an "officer-in-charge". Business as usual and NY politics at their finest.

The same situation happened last month with the Village of Fishkill PD.

On a point of order, there's definitely more to it than that, if you read carefully; they want the current Chief out:

"Schoenig doesn't want to appoint Mancone [the current Chief] as officer-in-charge because he "wants to take the department in another direction," he said. But, Schoenig said, he hopes Mancone will stay involved with the Community Affairs Department and in other areas."

It also looks like they have no plans to hold an exam for a classified Chief, they just want someone new in the job. Also it is interesting in that the county guy said that they have everyone listed as a part time officer, so they have no official record of there even being a Chief. There is definitely much more going on here politically that the article lets on.
