Fall 2009 Seminar Series

“Big City Strategies & Tactics for Small Town Fire Departments”

This seminar for all fire officers and firefighters is designed to show that firefighting is based on principles and practices. It also illustrates the importance of resources and the number of those resources that you may have available for a working structure fire. The program will lead students through a scenario in a large building fire in a small town with only seven members initially available. With a series of photos from an actual fire, the instructor will guide you through the decision making process necessary to determine what should be done in the early stages of this incident to address the incident priorities. You will use size up information and incident priorities to help develop a strategy for the incident. The presentation will review community hazards (hazard identification-capability assessment) and local resources, as well as the need for mutual aid or auto-response systems. Basic structural firefighting steps, what needs to be done to cover the basics of an incident and tactical and safety concerns will all be reviewed during this practical program that will benefit fire service personnel from all regions of New York state.
