Heard over the air -- you can't make this stuff up

44 posts in this topic

Damn...I can't believe some of mine didn't make the list.

But I have had some good exchanges with control....and a few generalized comments I like to use to break the tension or professionally let someone know they either are screwing up...or have no clue what they are doing...and of course some of my play by play updates while waiting extended periods of time for an ambulance.

As far as being a professional...that is a must but even a professional can have a sense of humor. We were even quite comical on the airwaves in the military quite often.

One summer evening a pursuit was coming down I-95 from CT and a PD dispatcher broadcast...

"All cars, suspect vehicle is now eastbound on 287 from I-95".

"Car XX HQ, do you mean westbound on 287?"

Dispatcher (quite annoyed and equally exasperated), "Negative, I said EASTbound on 287 from 95."

Car, "well then you better notify the Coast Guard 'cause that car's in the sound."

Just gonna throw this out there, but its not uncommon for a water condition call to end up being a fire that was put out by a sprinkler.

I don't think it's THAT common...

1. Fire is UNcommon in most places. 2 . Most water conditions are called in by first party callers watching the water either rise in there basement or overflow out of water source. 3. This was I believe "Replying to Heard over the air -- you can't make this stuff up" was trying to be a funny post. 4. Last but not least NAME TWO if NOT ONE water condtion that you have been to or have heard that turned into a fire.

I can think of 3 or 4 fires in the past few years that I've heard down here that started off as a service call for water leaking from the apartment above, and ended up being kitchen fires that were held or knocked by sprinkler activations. Many in College Park, One in Morningside, and several other fires down in the Silver Hill or Oxon Hill area. Granted, that's out of many water calls, hundreds of fires, and hundreds of thousands of calls in general, but those are just a few. This happens on a monthly, if not weekly basis.

While standing by outside a school as other members of his company investigated an activated alarm inside...

"313 to Yonkers you better send a lot of cops here I think there's a riot goin' on"

"10-4, 313, about how many students are involved?"

"How many does the school hold Yonkers?"

"OK, 313, we get it, Police are on the way"

Well we had an open mic apparently while I said "(road name) I dont know where the hell that is" after I realized we had an open mic cuz county raised me another channel, DC911 to XX-62, you make a right outta your firehouse second right on on xxx, first left, and then first left into development, it should be your next right."
