A NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE STORM SURVEY TEAM DETERMINED THAT

THUNDERSTORM DAMAGE ON AUGUST 16 IN AND NEAR POUGHKEEPSIE NEW YORK

WAS CONSISTENT WITH A SERIES OF MICROBURSTS. THE INTERMITTENT DAMAGE

EXTENDED FROM THE INTERSECTION OF ROUTE 9 AND SPACKENKILL ROAD IN

POUGHKEEPSIE ROUGHLY DUE EAST FOR FIVE MILES TO NEAR OLD SMITH ROAD

IN LAGRANGE NEW YORK. DAMAGE WAS ALSO OBSERVED IN RED OAK MILLS NEW

YORK.

THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE OCCURRED FROM THE INTERSECTION OF ROUTE

9 AND SPACKENKILL ROAD IN POUGHKEEPSIE EAST FOR ONE MILE ALONG

SPACKENKILL ROAD. THE PATH WIDTH REACHED ITS MAXIMUM OF ONE HALF

MILE IN THIS ZONE. NUMEROUS HARDWOOD AND SOFTWOOD TREES WERE SNAPPED

AND UPROOTED ALONG THE PATH. DIRECT DAMAGE WAS PRIMARILY CONFINED TO

TREES. MAXIMUM WIND SPEEDS BASED ON TREE DAMAGE WERE ESTIMATED AT

100 MPH.

TO THE EAST OF THIS REGION DAMAGE BECAME SPOTTY...SUGGESTING

MICROBURSTS RATHER THAN ONE PROLONGED MACROBURST. AGAIN...DAMAGE WAS

PRIMARILY CONFINED TO SNAPPED AND UPROOTED TREES. THE PATH OF DAMAGE

FINALLY ENDED NEAR OLD SMITH ROAD IN LAGRANGE NEW YORK.

Great Photos. I was watching the storm on the radar.

Couple things.

1) I hope that FF and the civilians where informed the Power was CUT before they approached these downed lines/transformers.

2) Just in case any of you FF out there want a good weather website to watch while at home or at your station, check out www.wunderground.com.

Fairly easy, just type in your zip code or town and state in the top right, then click on the wundermap option on the next page.

If you mess with the setting, and get it to show you the NEXRAD radar with storm tracks, it gives information about the Vertical integrated liquid, direction, speed, tops of the clouds.
