Syracuse, N.Y. -- The Elbridge Fire Department has been around for more than 150 years. Come March 15, it will exist on paper only.

The village of Elbridge, which owns the department’s trucks and building, all but pushed it out of existence Monday night when it called a state of emergency and put fire protection in the hands of the nearby Jordan Fire Department. Village officials and some Elbridge department members said manpower had become such a problem that the only way to ensure the safety of the village and nearby areas was to give the job to someone else....

Glad to hear of a department who realized it was time to step up to the plate and admit their was a problem and that consolidation was a result met with very little resistance. Kudos Elbridge for being aware of the problem, and thank you for your 150 years of dedicated service to your community.

Reality Bites, but congrats to those who admitted there was a problem grabbing the Bull by the horn and addressing the problem. Lets hope the dedicated 3 or so that were still busting their butt(hopefully) to do the right thing can still respond and be absorbed into 1 of the consolidated companies.

ELBRIDGE, N.Y. -- The fate of the Elbridge Fire Department will not end up in the hands of voters after all. Monday night, the Elbridge Village Board voted to no longer push to shut the fire department down.

The decision comes after the volunteer department brought evidence to the table to show they can provide adequate fire coverage....

Well to paraphrase that great American writer Mark Twain:

I guess the "rumors of their death have been greatly exaggerated"
