Anyone know what's going on? Helicopter has been using a spotlight for the past couple of hours on the river side of the mountain... At one point the bird got very low, as if to engage in hoisting ops, then flew off toward Newburgh and is now back searching again. There also appear to be lights on the mountain...

Stranded hiker(s), NYPD aviation and 2 ESU cops standing by (one rappel master, one tactical medic) to conduct a rescue if needed.

This sort of thing seems to happen with great frequency up there (meaning a few times a year especially during the summer). Usually the downed hikers can be gotten out by ground, but guess they were in a bad spot.

Should have left them in the woods for the night. It was not raining, snowing, hailing, freezing, etc. How much did that little trip cost the taxpayers because citidiots failed to leave the woods before dark? Someone's failure to exercise good judgment should not be cause for an emergency services response when there is not injury or risk of injury.

What was the outcome of this did nypd aviation have to preform a hoist operation or were they able to be escorted out by rescuers on the ground?

What do you think happens when you leave two cold and hungry people in the middle of the woods and tell them to wait until morning?? They try and get themselves out, putting them at greater risk of injury or death. There are better ways than abandonment to address this. Out west if you get into trouble due to your own stupid you get a bill for services.

NYPD was on standby with their helicopter, NYSP responded with their helicopter and provided lighting from the air for the rescuers from Cold Spring and North Highlands. A rescue line was set up at the top of the cliff and the subject was brought back up to the top without incident.
