Fire districts are canaries in tax cap mine shaft

ALBANY — Maybe the state’s new property tax cap is working, and maybe it isn’t. But for right now, no one knows for sure.

That’s because more than half of all the state’s nearly 900 fire districts failed to meet a deadline to report the tax cap data to the State Comptroller’s Office before adopting their budgets for the upcoming year.

Sad how they couldnt file the form on time, electronically. Takes about 10 minutes to do so.. It's not hard.

Once sent in, the Comptroller checks the math, and checks the block that says you filed it, and thats it. That info came straight from a rep from the Comptrollers office at the Association of Fire Districts Fall Workshop last month.
