NFPA’s Latest Estimates of home heating-related fires

Homes include one and two-family homes, apartments and other multi-family housing. Estimates were derived from the

USFA’s National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) and NFPA’s annual fire department experience survey. More

Home Heating Fires - 2010

Nationwide (estimates) show that the majority of home fires are caused by a fireplace or chimney (37%),

with a failure to clean as the leading cause (26%)

The majority of civilian deaths resulted from space heaters (79%)

were caused by a heater too close to combustibles (53%)
