Fire kills 35,000 chickens in Berks County

The Associated Press

May 15, 2005

More than 35,000 chickens were killed when a farmer's building caught fire, a fire chief said.

The fire started shortly before 11 a.m. Saturday on the farm of Stanley Seibel in Bethel Township, Berks County, Frystown Fire Company Chief Ray Marks said.

Marks commended firefighters for keeping the fire from spreading to nearby propane tanks and feed bins, and for getting it under control in about half an hour.

"The guys did a real good job because three-quarters of the chicken house is still standing," Marks said.

Marks estimated the damage at more than $85,000. State police were investigating the cause

I have fought several poultry barn fires in Adams County, PA

Let's just say that the smell of burned feathers is one of the most fowl (pun intended !) that I've experienced.

I don't know what it smells like, is it worse then burnt hair? That is the worse smell to me.

Very similar to burt hair, but more intense because there is thousands of birds involved. Not to mention the floors are covered in waste products etc. When you introduce water to fight the fire, the steam thickens and increases the smell.

Not for the weak of stomach.

Poultry MCI......

(Multiple Chicken Incident)

Thousands of flaming chickens, running out of the building, screaming........

How do you treat burns on chickens? Mayo?

Very small O2 masks....got 'em? This could happen in YOUR district.....

I'm staying away from KFC for awhile....yeah, right....those guys were inside doing salvage....sure, with front end loaders.....

From what I understand the Police had to be called to stop the fighting between KFC and the Local Chinese Restaurant.
