Mount Vernon, NY - 2-Alarm Fire -- 7/13/12

Location: 254 Union Avenue x Monroe/4th, Mount Vernon, NY

Frequency: 154.145 (Mount Vernon dispatch), 46.26 (60-Control dispatch).

Units Operating: appx 30 firefighters: Mount Vernon Fire Department; Pelham Fire Department; Eastchester Fire Department; New Rochelle Fire Department.

Transcare EMS. Mount Vernon Police Department.

American Red Cross.

Box Assignment:

Engine 1, Engine 5, Engine 4

Tower Ladder 1, Ladder 3

Rescue 1

Battalion 2 (Deputy Chief)

2nd Alarm Assignment:

Engine 2, Engine 6

Ladder 2

Weather Conditions: Mostly cloudy, calm wind, appx. 80 degrees.

Description of Incident: 2-Alarm working fire in the basement of 2.5-story frame, 50x30, semi-attached. Showed from three sides upon arrival. Primary and secondary searches were negative. One firefighter taken to local hospital for heat exhaustion. Cause is still under investigation.

Homeowner smelled smoke, went downstairs, and heard an explosion; exited home. The displaced family criticized FF's "slow pace". Most of the home is destroyed.

00:28 hrs: call came in. 10-26 transmitted. A few minutes later went to 2nd alarm.

00:57 hrs: Car 2 reports heavy fire in the basement, showing from three sides.

01:00 hrs: Car 2 reports primary search is negative.

01:05 hrs: M/A Pelham E-5 and Eastchester L-15 to 5 Monroe St. for inside smoke (address is around corner from fire).

01:08 hrs: Eastchester L-15 redirected to the fire scene, reporting to the front with tools.

01:10 hrs: M/A Truck to cover Mount Vernon.

01:11 hrs: M/A New Rochelle L-12 to cover.

01:17 hrs: Car 2 reports primary and secondary searches are complete and are negative.

01:20 hrs: Pelham E-5 reports 5 Monroe St. call is smoke from the fire on Union.

02:00 hrs (appx.): American Red Cross contacted and en-route. Seven adults displaced (one family and a relative visitor). Family given emergency lodging at a nearby hotel.
