RAMAPO — Cerbie, a 2-year-old police K-9, died Tuesday morning, the town said in a statement.

Cerbie had been placed in the Musbro Kennels in Orangeburg since Saturday while his handler, Ramapo Police Officer Andrew Sanchez, was out of town.

The cause of Cerbie’s death was not clear. A veterinarian will examine his body to determine why he died.

Cerbie had been with the Ramapo police since March 2011.

The dog graduated from the Orange County K9 Academy in July 2011 after a 16-week training course and was used for narcotics detection and for tracking.

He was also very friendly in the community policing setting, according to the statement, and great with children.

The Ramapo Police Department said it plans to have a remembrance ceremony for Cerbie.

Details weren’t immediately available.
