I was hired provisionally without being eligible on the current civil service list until I was able to take the exam. They make exceptions to training, as long as you have some firefighting, codes, or fire safety/prevention experience to work with. The new guy they just hired for Long Island had no codes classes but was damage control officer in Coast Guard with firefighting experience and they hired him providing he takes the exam, and takes the necessary codes training.
