Description: The United States is in the midst of a tremendous transformation regarding how

fires are fought. Everything has changed; the fire load, ventilation, building construction and

now, based on scientific testing & analysis, so have the methods of fire control. It’s all

changed! This presentation will take everybody from how we fought fires yesterday to how

we need to fight them today and explain why. Myths will be debunked and scientific

evidence will be presented to support the operational changes in fire attack.

David Walsh has been involved on the fire service since 1971. He’s had a 27 year career as a career

firefighter/fire officer with the Arlington Fire District in Poughkeepsie retiring in 2003. Dave has served as

the program Chairperson for the Fire Science program at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, NY

since 2004. Dave is a nationally certified level II Fire Instructor and also works as a New York State Fire

Instructor. Dave works on the development team for the NYS Instructor courses. Dave has had numerous

articles published in local as well as national magazines and has given presentations at the Fire Department

Instructors conference in Indianapolis, IN a number of times as well as in a number of states and also in

Antigua in the Caribbean.

Target audience: All fire service personnel

Prerequisites: None

Registration: Pre-registration is mandatory. Walk-ins are not permitted. Register through

your chief or training officer. Chief's and training officer's can register their personnel at;

http://emergencyservices.westchestergov.com/. Each student must present NYS Training

Authorization Letter which can be accessed and downloaded when registering. Class size is

limited to sixty-four (64) students.

Venue: Westchester County DES Training Center, 4 Dana Rd. – Grasslands Campus,

Valhalla, New York. All students are to park in the lot adjacent to the Support Services

Building located at 35 Walker Road. (There is a stairway linking the parking lot directly to

Dave is an outstanding fire instructor, perhaps one of the best & most knowledgeable in our area (which is a big statement given how much talent we have in this region).
