Mount Vernon has closed its firehouse on Oak Street for the foreseeable future so it can undergo long-needed structural repairs.

The crews and fire engine from Station 4 — Mount Vernon's oldest firehouse — will be moved to Station 3 on West Third Street until the city can open a temporary site near the Mount Vernon West train station. Emergency medical services will be spread around the city to maintain response times, the city announced.

Some more on the story:

Two weeks after Mount Vernon shut its Oak Street firehouse over structural and health concerns, it remains uncertain whether the City Council will support Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard's plan to relocate the engine company.

The mayor has proposed a temporary firehouse at the Mount Vernon West train station, urging the council to approve a one-year lease with MacQuesten Station Takeover LLC for $7,500 a month.

The 3,700-square-foot space at Mount Vernon Avenue and South West Street would provide living quarters for 10 to 14 firefighters and officers, a commercial kitchen, offices, a dining room and a day room. A tent large enough to cover two fire engines would be built in the parking lot.
