FDNY Apparatus designations?

8 posts in this topic

OK, time for me to admit my ignorance...

I'm lost :D when it comes to the various designations (TRUCK, ENGINE, LADDER, etc.) for FDNY apparatus, and what the function of each one is! That, and where the different stations are located. Is there anywhere (maybe on FDNY's website) it's all listed??

Engine = Pumper most are 1000gpm with 500gal of water.

Truck = Tower Ladder or Rearmount Aerial

Ladder = Tower Ladder or Rearmount Aerial

There are so many more. I will try to work on a nice complete list, if you are very interested pickup a copy of the FDNY Operational reference. You can also go over the photo gallery on my site and see some of the rigs.

You can get a list of Firehouses location here.

T pretty much nailed it. The whole Truck thing is more of an old fashioned term. If you notice, we say Ladder three-seven, or Thirty-seven Truck.

Rescue: Heavy Rescue type apparatus.

Squad: Rescue Pumper type apparatus which can operate in a plethora of capacities.

Battalion: Chief officer in charge of a group of companies

Division: Chief officer in charge of a group of battalions.

Marine: Fireboat

That's pretty much the meat and potatos of it.

this site can kinda be helpful in finding where the houses are. you have to mapquest them yourself but it will lead you in the general direction.

Technically Squad is a rescue-pumper.

It has Engine, "Truck" and Rescue company tools to make it a multi purpose unit.
