Winnipeg fire truck wrecked during joyride

CTV.ca News Staff

Updated: Sun. Feb. 26 2006 11:32 PM ET

Winnipeg firefighters had a fire truck stolen Sunday -- the second time in two years.

The firefighters had parked the truck and left the motor running while they went inside a building to help an injured woman.

A man saw the opportunity to steal the truck and sped away for a joyride.

"It's probably something more of an opportunity," said Winnipeg Police Sgt. Kelly Dennison. "The one running vehicle just happened to be a fire truck."

WFPS District Chief Terry Gardiner could not believe the thief would choose a fire truck and hope to escape the police.

"How do you ever expect to get away with it?" he said.

The joyrider sped backwards several blocks, crashing into a bench, bus stop and streetlight  before finally hitting some trees. Fortunately, no pedestrians were hit.

In an ironic twist of fate, the firefighters they had to help the joyrider out of the driver's seat after finding the truck.

"We actually had to extradite him out of the vehicle," said Gardiner. "So he needed our assistance through a cause of his own."

A 37-year-old man was taken to hospital and could face charges of impaired driving and theft over $5,000 when he is released.

Meanwhile, damage to the truck has been estimated at $300,000. Repairs could take a full year.

Firefighters are even more upset, however, because the truck had a brand new pump.

"This is a brand new pump that we got a week ago," said Gardiner. "And the guys were really gung-ho about this brand new piece of machinery."

Firefighters will now have to use a truck with a 1976 engine -- far from brand new.

A Winnipeg fire truck was last taken in 2004 on New Year's Eve. The joyride resulted in $10,000 worth of damage to the vehicle and a 25-year-old man was arrested.

You would kind that there is common good here but appearently not... any one that tries this stunt should be thrown into a padded room because what are you honestly going to do with a firetruck i mean come one. while i do not condon stealling a car, if you are going to steal one make it anice one not a big huge and conspicus fire truck and that sucks about it being new and having to use old eqipment. maybe we should give them a hand or at least have the maker fix it because they kinda need to put out fires
