  10. State Police put their bird down on top of Breakneck a few years back in a pretty hairy spot. Not like that one though.
  11. On August 12th and August 16th the North Highlands Fire Department’s Firefighter’s used their new building for training for the first time. The building was built with a Self Escape Window for training. North Highlands recently purchased 22 R.I.T Emergency Escape and Self Rescue Systems. The class this past week was a Train the Trainer class given by First Due Training from Staten Island and here are some pictures.
  12. All the training was done at the new firehouse. We just finished (almost finished 95%) building the new firehouse and we built into the building a bail out window and a confined space hole.
  13. I have to disagree with you on this one , here is a quote from the link above. Pre-hospital The most important measure is rapid transport to a health care facility that has the ability to administer antivenin. Many different pre-hospital treatments have been proposed.8 Their efficacy is generally controversial. Immobilization of the patient is recommended. Movement may promote propagation of the venom and increase risk of systemic effects prior to reaching the controlled hospital environment. Local ice should not be used as necrosis related to vasoconstriction in poorly perfused tissues may occur. Some authors recommend constricting bands, but only if they can be precisely pressure regulated so as to obstruct lymphatic and superficial drainage without obstructing venous or arterial flow. Constricting bands carry the risk of increasing tissue necrosis distal to the band. With this being said and the lack of anti-venom up in hudson valley hospitals I think the best way is by air. It would be about an hour ride by ground to the bronx in the best of traffic (Plus the time you were on scene). Now how long would it take durning rush hour , or how long from dutchess or Orange county. The best thing would be for our local hospitals to carry anti-venom but with the cost of it I dont see that happening anytime soon.
  14. Seems like this could be a good topic to talk about. CKROLL in reference to your post I'm not sure but I dont believe Hudson Valley has any anti venom. I know our 911 center made some phone calls and came up with Jacoby. I did hear for sure West Med did not have any. I think we made it pretty much policy now to fly any of our snake bite vics to Jacoby after the one we had a couple years ago (please dont quote that because I'm not 100%) , Unless your 100% you know what kind of snake it was. The problem we had a couple years ago was the local Hospital we sent the girl to ran out of anti venom and they sent her to Jacoby after much wasted time anyway. She was in real bad shape and that was from what we belive was a copperhead bite. There are Timber Rattlers all over the Hudson Valley and I'm really supprised we dont get more bites with all the people in the woods. I guess my question is does anyone have any protocols for snake bites.
  15. Date:8/4/2009 Time:22:20 Location: Lake Suprise Camp off Lake Suprise Rd. Frequency: 46.380 Units Operating: Philipstown VAC , North Highlands , Fire Medic 1 , Stat Flight Weather Conditions: Warm Description Of Incident: 21 year old female camp worker was bitten by a snake while walking to cabin. Dispatch reports of 2 puncture wounds on leg. From the distance between puncture's (at least 2 inches) I estimate the snake at at least 5 foot long and definitely a viper (most likely a Timber Rattlesnake). Pt was transported to Jacoby Hospital via Stat Flight. UPDATE: I spoke with the camp director today and he said no anti venom was given. The hospital thinks it was a dry hit (more a defensive bite with no venom injected). There was very little swelling at the bite sight with no other symptoms. Reporters: Writer: NHFD21255

  19. We run Lukas which was bought by Hurst a couple years back and we've never had a problem. They are lighter than the Hurst tools and have twist controls which are real easy to use. They also have the cutters that cut thru the new gen metal thats out there (I's sure others do too ). I've used Hurst , Lukas and holmatro and out of them I like the lukas and not just because we have them. I think , but I'm not sure Putnam Valley has Lukas and they would be the ones to ask being as they probably use them once a week on the parkway
  20. I'm sure there will be many more to come but here's just a couple from the pocket camera before the battery went dead. This was about a 1/2 hour into it. Just a little of what I saw 6 portable pools with 3 engines feeding 3 ladder trucks (3 5" lines), and a whole lot of tankers (East Fishkill's tankers 2 , Hughsonville , Pawling , Beekman , Chelesa , North Highlands , Lake Carmel , Kent and Patterson. May have been even more
