  1. Are you f'ing kidding me!!!!!!!!!! Must be nice to have taxpayers with deep pockets! $13,950,000 for 18,000 feet is $775/sq ft. . And averaging about 260 calls per year. How do you even try to justify that?
  2. Read http://www.csb.gov/a...inal_Herrig.pdf. It is a common misconception that the ends of a tank are the weakest. I originally was posting info for the "untrained" persons and basic info for your friends/family. But I certainly have no objection to getting into discussions on fire ground tactics. If you get on scene of a (propane) tank involved in a fire and the relief valve is operating, be extremely cautious as a BLEVE could be imminent. It all depends on how much was in the tank, how much product is left, how long it has been exposed to fire, and a host of unknowns. Probably the most "famous" incident to spur the training of industry personnel and responders was the Ghent, WV explosion (http://www.csb.gov/i...ail.aspx?SID=10 ) Which killed 3 ff (1 died of complications of injuries some 2 1/2 years later) and 2 technicians. BTW, the longest distance of a propane tank to travel from a BLEVE was about 3/4 of a mile. It involved a railcar. (3640 ft, Murdoch, Illinois, 1983 http://flashovertv.firerescue1.com/Clip.aspx?key=C78C0C6BE771A800 )
  3. Also, it amazes me that other trades don't have to comply with NFPA 54 and 58 (National Fuel Gas Code). I don't know how many times I've had to move tanks because the homeowner decided to get central a/c and the condensor is next to my tanks.
  4. JFLYNN - - Thanks for that info. I'm not sure what the specific gravity of natural gas is, just that it is lighter than air and that it will accumulate in a residence to an explosive level. (West Haverstraw, NY 1/16/12, Corning,NY 8/3/12) Propane is 1.5 times heavier than air. It's LEL is 2.19%. With an expansion of liquid to vapor of 270 times, a 100 lb cylinder (24 gallons if not overfilled) is more than enough to level a 2 story house. 585 -- As long as you can call 911 from a cell phone or neighbors phone OUTSIDE and AWAY from the affected structure, that's fine. It only takes a few seconds to turn off a tank. Of course, if it's the tank that's leaking, that's a whole other scenario.
  5. http://realestate.aol.com/blog/2012/08/31/gas-leak-blows-up-home-in-connecticut-killing-anthony-fratino/?icid=maing-grid10%7Chtmlws-main-bb%7Cdl10%7Csec1_lnk3%26pLid%3D200172 There have been several gas related explosions lately. i would like to take this moment to talk about some basic safety. For you, your families, friends, neighbors, etc. Keep in mind that propane is heavier than air and will tend to settle in low areas, basements, crawl spaces, along floors, etc. Natural gas is lighter than air and will collect along ceilings, in attics, etc. Both will collect in areas with little to no ventilation, IF YOU SMELL GAS: Leave the building without turning any lights on or off. Do not use the phone in the affected structure. If it is safe to do so, turn of the gas supply at the source For natural gas, the meter. For propane, turn off the tank. Call 911 AND your gas supplier. DO NOT attempt to make repairs yourself. Call a QUALIFIED technician. I am always amazed at some of the "homeowner" repairs and connections. How they don't blow themselves up is beyond me. Just because your buddy once helped a plumber put in a sink, doesn't mean he is qualified to connect your water heater. And just because your neighbor is a plumber, does not mean he is qualified to do gas plumbing and repair.

  8. Town is TransCare. Village is MLSS.
  9. Nothing in Rockland. Orange has stations in City of Newburgh (1), Town of Newburgh (3), Montgomery (8), Middletown, Circleville, Goshen, Monroe, medic at Stewart Airport for Lifeguard-18, as well as the previously mentioned Post 1 North. The headquarters/dispatch is on 9W in New Windsor. Dutchess County Stations: Village of Fishkill (20)(covering the village and most of the town), East Fishkill (21), Village of Wappingers(23), Town of Poughkeepsie (25), City of Poughkeepsie (26), Hyde Park (27), and the previously mentioned Post 22. i think that covers most of it.
  10. Always 100% chance of weather.
  11. yes, that is correct. I forgot about Marlboro - Station 19.
  12. MLSS has stations in Highland, Kingston, New Patlz, Modena, and Rosendale. Some of these are contract stations which means they are always staffed. Some of them are staffed as call volume and staffing permits. I believe that MLSS is either the contracted ALS provider or 2nd due when the local vollies can't get out for such places as Accord, Kerhonkson, Esopus, etc. NWFD Medic can give you the complete rundown.
  13. Were they? Does the Village of Woodridge have Hatzolah as their EMS provider or was this simply another case of a private "citizen" calling their own private ambulance? I don't think they call 911 when they have an emergency. I believe they call their own private dispatch. I responded to the Thruway for an MVA. A suburban with about 9 or 10 of them in it rolled down an embankment. They refused our services, refused the services of the legitimately dispatched ambulances and waited for Hatzolah to come to Newburgh from KJ
  14. I should have expanded on that. No. We would not wait for the building to burn down.
  15. No MDT's. Nothing or very little in our pre-plans. We have a mix of residential, light commercial, and industrial in our district. Our residential structures run the gammet of older balloon frame to newer light-weight construction. The commercial/industrial also are greatly varied from strip malls to large open warehouses. To my knowledge, only the bowling alley with its bow-string truss roof, is designated as exterior attack only assuming no immediate life threat.
  16. But that would assume that you have E-Z Pass.. We cover the Thruway, entering and returning through Interchange 17. We have never had E-Z Pass in any of our apparatus, including chief's cars. I guess we have to get them now. They should just issue all departments the orange non-revenue tags. Those record your entry/exit but do not charge.
  17. I guess I'd file this under the topic of WTF? Although the article is poorly written, it appears that since the NYSTA is required to issued refunds, you now have to pay (?). I guess they can't refund what you don't pay instead of just not charging you in the first place. If you have to stop and pay on the way to a call, try not shutting off the siren while you're waiting for your change. http://www.midhudsonnews.com/News/2012/June/19/emer_Thruway_tolls-19Jun12.html
  18. Maybe I misled/mispoke with the "non-transporting first responder" thing. No. We are just a fire dept that happens to run a fair amount of mva's. We are NOT (any more) a BLSFR agency. So, no, we do not have a medical director.
  19. I was wondering how some of you go about following up on patient condition, outcome, or even survival. This is coming more from the standpoint of a non-transporting first response agency such as a fire department. We have often wondered what happened to those we extricated or otherwise treated. Not having any personal contacts at hospitals, how does one get information on extent of injuries and treatments to a patient?
  20. Keep up the good work. PoJo article here: http://www.poughkeepsiejournal.com/article/20120530/NEWS01/120530022/Arlington-fire-top-5-percent-national-departments?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|News|s
  21. In this case, the patient was intubated and had a nasty fractured leg. Don't know if they just checked out the helicopter and continued or transferred the pt. upon landing. Made my heart skip a beat when the county called to advise us of the incident. Other than some unexpected manuevers by the pilot, I didn't see anything occur when they left the LZ.
  22. So this only applies if you want national registry. ??
  23. Maybe INIT915 or another LEO member can help me out here; i thought NYS VTL stated that an emegency vehicle can only travel 10mph over the posted limit while en-route to an emergency? I don't know if it's NYS law, but on the EMS side, there is DOH policy.http://www.health.ny.gov/nysdoh/ems/policy/00-13.htm I believe that only the "due regard" clause applies to LE.
  24. As someone already said, "figures lie, liars figure". This in no way calling anyone a liar. Only to point out the fact that anyone can make any statistic valid to their point of view. As a VOLUNTEER firefighter, I have been passed by other emergency vehicles from ALL services, PD, EMS, and other fire, as well as every day citizens while responding in the apparatus. While responding in my POV, I yield to emergency vehicles but have also been escorted through traffic by PD. As a CAREER(PAID) EMS worker, I have been passed many times by POV's, PD, and FIRE. As a driver with a CDL, I am subject to higher standards and penalties regardless of the vehicle I am driving. My license is my income. I get paid by the hour, not by the call or number of patients I transport. Just because YOU called 911, does not make it MY emergency. The point is, CAREER or VOLUNTEER, on duty, or off, it is an INDIVIDUAL's responsibilty to drive safely, with due regard, at ALL times.
  25. I wouldn't think so. However, my question is this: If you don't run EMS calls, and you have no EMS trained persons on your crew, what is your liability for having and not using said equipment, or attempting to use it without proper training?
