  1. LAFD SOP (SOG) for car fires: (thanks, Chris!) There are many good reasons for this. Everyone should follow this practice! In addition to leaving the scene, the operator should get slapped with unsafe transportation of a load, probably HazMat to boot, that 550 tank is not strapped down at all. What a knucklehead... taking the plates off...as if the cops can't trace a VIN #?
  2. From the National Fire Protection Association http://www.nfpa.org/itemdetailjournal.asp?categoryID=2101&itemID=49197 There will soon be more of these vehicles on the road, and they bring special implications associated with them including public and private charging stations. This topic is something every first responder should have knowledge about.
  3. Looks like we dodged a bullet. The NWS dropped the Winter Storm Warning for us out here! We still have the high wind and coastal flood warnings. The bulk of the snow is now forecast to be west of us. At least we won't have to stock up on French toast!
  4. Merry Christmas! Be safe. Everyone goes home.
  5. Word on the news is it just passed. Once the politicians finish congratulating themselves, now we'll see what the bill can do for those who gave some, and those that gave all.
  6. I found a used copy online, I can't wait for it to get here!
  7. Just when you thought it couldn't get any more pathetic, this is reminding me very much of former Iraqi Information Minister Sahhaf. The family "lawyers" manage to invent yet more delusions about what "really happened" . They are not helping their "clients". Too bad their clients don't know that. Meanwhile those facing charges do require legal representation, they certainly deserve better.
  8. A personal word to our Brother and Sister Tarrytown responders: Keep your chin up through all this. You will emerge from this tragedy stronger, and more resolute than ever before.
  9. A lot of good information is being exchanged here. Special Thanks to Capt. Bnechis for sharing his expertise. Hopefully everyone can grasp how vitally important understanding and implementing the OSHA standards are and can go back and evaluate how well or poorly their own programs are functioning. If you're not sure how to do this, there are professional outfits that can help or do it for you. You don't want an incident report investigation identifying your shortcomings and failures, after the fact. Then it's too late. Unfortunately as a result of this catastrophe, Tarrytown is discovering that they were woefully unprepared in the worst possible way imaginable.
  10. Got a good laugh, Chief! Thanks for sharing. And for those of us who are (were) MPO's, aside from the comic relief, some food for thought. You alone can create entirely different outcomes for the guy on the nob with just a few pounds of pressure, one way or the other... though it is always a blast to watch the nozzleman levitate a few inches and knowing you did that!
  11. The way we used to deal with the facial hair issue was any employee that might be expected to use a respirator during the course of the workday would have to be clean shaven at the beginning of the shift (with the exception of the permissible mustache) or else was directed to shave or be sent home with no pay, and further disciplinary action would follow. It's called being fit for duty. No way would I want to be the one who put a guy in a respirator with a facepiece seal that might leak due to hair growth, and then have something go seriously wrong, and have that come out in a similar report. This is per Pick-and-choose which requirements you would like to ignore at your own risk.
  12. The official incident report is a scathing indictment in so many ways. So many lapses and on so many levels. It's appalling. How many departments have air-line respirators necessary for use in this type of hazard/confined space entry? (And no, this is NOT your Scott pack) And how many departments have a continuing respiratory protection program, documenting employee annual (re)certification training, quarterly hands-on refresher training/ use dates, showing signatures who took it, who gave it, and what was covered? Then there is documenting the monthly equipment inspections, and required annual respirator equipment performance testing and certification performed by a qualified vendor? Who does your annual employee respirator fit testing and medical exams? Nobody said it's easy to stay on top of all of this, but you can and you must, in order to avoid the possibility of a repeat incident of this nature. Lives depend on it. Full Disclosure Statement: prior to retiring as a Senior Specialist in Con Edison's Environmental Health & Safety, one of my responsibilities was for Westchester Gas Operation's Respiratory Protection Program encompassing over one hundred covered employees, and believe me, it's a daunting task. But with qualified trainers assisting and meticulous record keeping, it can be done.
  13. These lawyers.... They don't understand the use of deadly force by police is sometimes justified. All the hyperbole is to be expected.
  14. 38 square miles makes it pretty large, however it must be mostly rural with under 8000 people. Aside from the financial issues it seems to me another instance where call volume and available resources are at loggerheads. Volunteers can only volunteer so much. They have a life, too. If giving "perks" is what it takes to get more participation, so be it.
  15. Once someone complains the map shows all the plows are at DunkinDonuts for the last hour, the real-time locations available to the public will get modified.
  16. We are back in business! The hosting provider that manages our server apparently has figured out the problem, and full forum features have now been restored. We hope this was a one-time glitch!
  17. Please review the EMTBravo Forum Rules and Conditions. If anyone has issue with the policies or moderation of the site, please take it up with the site administration or a moderator in private. Airing grievances regarding the operation or moderation of the site in public in the forums is unacceptable and significantly reduces your chances of getting a hearing at all. Thanks for understanding.
  18. Congrat's, Chief, and Good Luck! Don't forget to update your rank on the member profile page !
  19. Thursday Dec 9 2010 7:00 PM Mini Public Hearing on the 2011 County Budget at the Westchester County Center (Little Theater) – 198 Central Avenue, White Plains Heard on the grapevine: at this meeting the abolition of Westchester County Department of Emergency Services will be discussed!
  20. We're gonna release a new APP for your smart-phones to instantly upload your IA to EMTBravo, You all should be able to post within seconds of arrival on scene. It will accept incident photos, too !!! But wait, There's more!!!! No more calling in "on Location" to your dispatch, they'll see the IA and know you're there! (umm, yeah,,,right)
  21. Rule number one in sensationalism reporting: never let the facts get in the way of a good story.
  22. These guys saw the hand-writing on the wall, and got out while the getting was good. The proposed layoffs would have had the same effect by closing companies, so don't lay blame on the guys who simply took their due.
  23. OK. The topic title says it all.
  24. In a "nut"shell, (groans) this is intended to be a section incorporated within the forums where members can publish articles in areas their expertise. PS: I moved this discussion to create a new topic.
  25. It's interesting that you should make that observation! EMTBravo staff are just beginning discussion of adding a new integrated blog feature to the forums. There is nothing definitive yet, it's just entering the thought stages right now. We will make an announcement come launch time. Stay tuned.
