Doesn't work for all of them, but it works when you can get good access to the TOP terminal batteries
AlSO A TOOL FOR SIDE TERMINALS
-
Simple little tool called a Battery Terminal Puller removes the terminal from the battery faster then cutting. You can get a cheap one for $10 or a good one for $30. Then you can always reconnect if you have to. You do no damage.

We saw it in NYC with Sigorny Weaver some time ago. Wish I could go to this Walter. No sitter for the big guy and with being away and the limited time I have for the next few weeks, it'll be tough. you know I'm there in spirit.

Now if they only had enough firefighters to man them

Many departments make arrangements to move families into the fire house during the stand by. If your family is at the firehouse, you know they are safe. That is most important. The house can be repaired or even replaced if need be. The families physical well being is more important. If you know they are safe, you can concentrate on the job at hand.

All right you young whippersnappers everything you guys have said is true long coats/3/4 boots but heres one thing I learned on when I joined the fire service--Nov 1966 thats right 1966. Pocantico hook and ladder Company #1 North Tarrytown Fire Department.
We had MSA filter masks 6 per company and only one SCBA per apparatus. You guys going to do your home work on MSA filter masks . They had tape on the bottom and a color monitor built in, when the colors matched you changed the filter. they looked like WW1 gas masks. No such thing as positive pressuer masks--you had to suck the air in through the filter.
thank goodness with in 2 or 3 years all of the filter masks were replaced by SCBA.
You got me Cap, 1973, gear was on the rigs climb up when you got their and change. 2 SCBA's per rig in a case. Riding the back step,(miss getting dressed while hanging on) or on the truck the side step if someone was already in the 2 jump seats. We had the old MSA's but they were out of service. Had my own gloves. later after I took my essentials class I got a canvas coat and pull up boots and Leather New Yorker assigned to me. Still have the NY'er. And we all shared the same face piece. It was assigned to the mask.

Congrats to our US Military and Intellegince Organizations for a Job well done! I give them all the credit not our President. He's just riding on George W.'s coattail.
Did you notice how many times in his speak he said "I"

To the members of Seal Team 6 and all the supporting troops that assisted in this mission, we all thank you.

It's all about taxes and the all mighty dollar. adding 1 man per shift is actually adding 4 men to the department. Add 1 per rig and you get the drift. Now figure each at a salary, benefits plus training costs etc. No one wants to see a raise in taxes. Its simple. Raise taxes and you will get a revolt. People are having trouble paying the bills already. No tell them their tax bill is going up $500 a year. Look at the other costs, gas, heating, food, insurance, health care and its never ending. My school district is looking for a 2 3/4% raise. I don't think that will pass unanimously. I just filled my gas tank. Only a 18 gallon tank and it was $70. I just cut channels out on cable and now I am looking at cutting my cell costs as well. Everyone is looking to save money so as bad as it is, you're not going to see manning go up soon. b**** all you want, no town, village or city official will listen.

The fact that to be an EMT you cannot have a felony record will keep most of the members who live in town from taking the test.

Nothing will happen anyplace in Westchester unless one of 2 things happen, the issue is forced or someone is willing to give up their fife-tum.
Walter didn't he also say it ain't over till its over?
-
Here is a scenario, Volunteer chief uses the department car and get reimbursed for mileage and pockets the money while the department has paid for the gas, maintenance etc. Is the chief then stealing from the department? The taxpayers?
-
What about when that department vehicle is used for monetary gain?

If the melt down hits the water table below Japan there could be an explosion which will cause major radiation into the atmosphere. Heard the US Gov't is sending former NJ Gov. Christine Todd Whitman over there. Isn't she the one who said its ok to breath the air at ground zero?

Just remember, 911, how long before the fed responded? Even National Guard. I don't think I saw anything that even resembled military for 2 days.

Mike, correct that was the book. All you have to look at is the number of events of the last few years. Earthquake activity has increased or at least they have become more noticeable. So have volcanic activity. Not that I believe in Nostradamus' theory but catastrophic events are on the increase worldwide.
-
The U.S. East coast does have a history earthquakes and unlike the west coast we have no sismic building codes.
NY Earthquakes About 20 years ago FEMA was commenting that the east coast was due for a major quake and if its epicenter was near Boston, that due to the masonary "ordinary" construction Boston could see 60-80% of its buildings with very sever damage or distroyed. SO yes earthquake is a major threat, but what about a tsunami?
You are correct that an earthquake generated tsunami on the US East Coast is unlikely. But, a mega tsunami trigered by a volcanic event in the canary islands and the shearing off of half the volcano will cause a 200 foot high wall of water to strike the entire eastern seaboard. Canary Islands and CNN Warning
I read a book about 2 years ago that talked about that very subject Barry. A volcanic event that caused a part of the island to split, fall into the ocean and cause a 200 ft Tsunami that would hit the east coast. The scientific community is split on this from what I remember.

AJSBEAR dont you live up on a hill?? just asking
I thought the tasuanimi hit yesterday at least along the Saw Mill River and the Hutch.
Yes Cap, Further up river than you and yes up on a hill. A 30 foot wall of water if it made it this far up the Hudson still won't get up here but I have to come down off the mountain to get supplies. And the boy eats everything in site lately.

I have been down there both before and after, my wife is from the Breezy/Roxbury area and there are several issues in rebuilding. Most of the area has been grandfathered in because they do not meet current building codes. If they tare down completely they cannot rebuild by the rules. Temporay housing can be set in Floyd Bennett Field which is by Roxbury. Many of the homes have either been destroyed, burned down, or washed away. Where do you start. 3/4 of the homes have damage. Then take Long Beach. 100% lost power and much still is not back. With flooding, putting the wires underground is not an option.
